Kim Possible

Kim Possible—a corny name, to be sure. But, as the saying goes, “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” This Disney television series uses the old “teenager who saves the world by night and goes to school by day” routine and reinvigorates it. Kim Possible is a high school sophomore whose web site states “I can do anything.” With her best friend Ron Stoppable (a slacker with a warm heart) and his pet naked mole rat Rufus (the source of many naked jokes), they span the world without a driver’s license, fighting evil and helping people; at the same time, they struggle through the reality of school where their experience with crime-stopping can’t solve the situations they face.

The creativity within the show is overwhelming. Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle, the minds behind the Emmy Award-winning series Disney/Pixar’s Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Disney’s Hercules, are the creators and executive producers for Kim Possible. The series features a retro 50s style of animation from character design artist Stephen Silver. The plotlines are fairly original, avoiding many clichés attributed to the “secret agent” adventure genre.

It’s the dichotomy of the show that makes it appealing. The target audience (tweens) can relate to the difficulties Kim faces at school and in her personal life, and they can marvel at her James Bond-esque adventures. Girls will enjoy a strong female character who is shown dynamically at school, at home, and at work. Guys will find Ron to be a witty comic relief (he gets some really clever lines) and Kim being a cheerleader also helps. :)

Main Characters:

Kim Possible (VA Christy Carlson Romano): Upbeat, courageous femme who tries to balance her occupation with saving the world against her life as a high school sophomore. Part of the social elite at school (hello, she’s a cheerleader) and a renowned hero across the globe.

Ron Stoppable (VA Will Friedle): Even though he’s not exactly A-list in school, Kim’s his best friend. He sometimes resents his position as sidekick (“Why do I always have to be the diversion?”), but he’s loyal to Kim.

Rufus, the Naked Mole Rat (VA Nancy Cartwright): This offbeat animal companion is very close to Ron, who looks after the little rodent constantly. Rufus often plays a pivotal role in the plot despite his diminutive size.

Wade, the Webmaster (VA Tahj Mowry): An enigmatic person, Wade provides a technological edge to Kim’s missions. He manages her website, keeps her updated on global crises, and occasionally hacks into Kim’s diary.

Bonnie Rockwaller (VA Kirsten Storms): A combative, snooty cheerleader, Bonnie is the antagonist in Kim’s school life. Kim finds herself at odds with Bonnie in almost every episode.

Dr. Dad Possible (VA Gary Cole) & Dr. Mom Possible (VA Jean Smart): Ah, a rocket scientist and a brain surgeon…kind of hints at something, don’t ya think? Plus, it makes for very interesting parent-daughter interactions.

Mr. Steve Barkin (VA Patrick Warburton): This high-strung high school coach makes for a nice foil against Ron’s neurotic personality. He acts as the overbearing authority figure in Kim’s school life.

Dr. Drakken (VA John DiMaggio): Kim Possible’s arch-nemesis; he is scientifically brilliant, but he isn’t quite all there mentally. Drakken is essentially a lampoon of the numerous James Bond villains.

Shego (VA Nicole Sullivan): Dr. Drakken’s second-in-command, she is the physically combative of the pair. Almost as hot as Kim, the two of them have a long-standing rivalry.

Comments:

Granted, the premise of Kim Possible is somewhat clichéd; however, it more than makes up for its flaws with a novel animation style, witty scripts (for the most part), and a talented voice ensemble. Kim’s character is developed well by showing all aspects of her life and having them affect each other. Disney did screw up the order of the first episodes, but other than that, Kim Possible should be in for a healthy three year run.

Ron: Ask Mankey? I don't know Kim. Don't you think he might feel... awkward... with us?
Kim: "Us"?
Ron: Well, we always go together.
Kim: Yeaahh... But that's as, y'know, friends. And, this time, I was thinking about lining up a... Y'know...
Ron: An enemy?
Kim: A *date*.

Drakken: Enough chitchat! My pets are famished. Perhaps you two could stay--
Kim: For lunch?
Drakken: I wasn't going to say that.
Ron: Oh, dude, you were so "for lunch".
Drakken: Fine! Yes! Then stay for lunch!

Kim: Wade, Ron's missing. Can you find him?
Wade: (indignant) Do you think I have him microchipped, or something?
Kim: Well, do you?
Wade: (reluctantly) Yeah, hang on...
