The Great Mouse Detective

The year is 1897, and it’s time for Queen Mousetoria’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years on the throne. However, there’s another reason to celebrate tonight: little Olivia Flaversham is celebrating her birthday. However, her b-day bash is cut short when a crazy bat kidnaps her father Hiram, a beloved toymaker. Determined to get her father back, Olivia comes across the kindly Dr. Dawson, who leads her to the one mouse who can rescue Father Flaversham: Basil of Baker Street, the Sherlock Holmes of the Mouse World.

When Basil, Dawson, and Olivia try to rescue Hiram from the evil clutches of Professor Ratigan, they soon realize that they’re dealing with more than just a missing father - they’ve landed themselves in the middle of a terrible plot against the Queen! And only Basil can save the day - but it’s gonna take all his detective skills to solve his greatest case ever...

The Great Mouse Detective, when it first came out in 1986, did quite well in theaters, but still, it is an underappreciated movie that needs to be recognized. Featuring brilliant animation, catchy musical numbers, an all-star cast (including the voices of Vincent Price and Alan Young), a thrilling score by Henry Mancini, and a climactic battle scene in the clockworks of Big Ben (featuring the first CGI ever used in an animated feature), The Great Mouse Detective is one of the most marvelous Disney films - one that the whole family can enjoy.

Main Characters:

Basil of Baker Street VA : Barrie Ingham
The wonderful hero of the movie. A miniature version of Sherlock Holmes, he solves his greatest case in this movie.

Professor Ratigan VA : Vincent Price
The sexy, suave, scary, and sinister villain of the movie. He plots to get rid of Queen Mousetoria and become the King Of All Mousedom, but there’s one thing standing in his way: “that miserable, second-rate detective, Basil Of Baker Street!”

Dr. David Q. Dawson VA : Val Bettin
This portly gentlemouse helps Olivia Flaversham, and later becomes the “trusted associate” of Basil Of Baker Street.

Olivia Flaversham VA : Susanne Pollatschek
The plucky (and super-adorable) heroine of the movie. Eager to find her father, Olivia tends to get in trouble a lot.

Hiram Flaversham VA : Alan Young
Olivia’s father, and a toymaker. He is the pawn in Ratigan’s evil scheme to take over all of Mousedom.

Fidget VA : Candy Candido
The creepy (but pretty funny) bat that works for Professor Ratigan. Fidget usually does the dirty work for his boss.

Queen Mousetoria VA : Eve Brenner
The Mouse Queen of England. She serves a major part in the story, despite her being a “minor” character.

Toby VA : Frank Welker (uncredited)
This adorable basset puppy helps Basil and the gang during various parts of the movie. He belongs to Sherlock Holmes.

Felicia VA: Frank Welker (uncredited)
The fat executioner cat for Professor Ratigan.

Bartholomew VA: Barrie Ingham
One of Ratigan’s thugs. He is killed when Felicia eats him after he insults Ratigan. Bartholomew has a fondness for alcohol.

Mrs. Judson VA: Diana Chesney

A showgirl-singer in The Rat Trap Saloon.

Favorite scenes:

As a die-hard GMD fan, I can’t find a particular scene that’s my favorite. I deduce it’s safe to say I like all of them!

Although there are a particular few I really like:

~The whole toy store scene

~The very beginning

~When Ratigan arrives at the Diamond Jubilee, dressed in royal garb

~When we first see Basil’s house

~The song scenes for “The World’s Greatest Criminal Mind” and “Let Me Be Good To You”

~The very end of the movie

~The Big Ben Chase

~The scene when Basil and Ratigan race in their hot-air balloons

~The Rat Trap scene

~When we first see Basil

~When Olivia and Hiram are reunited

~When Basil, Dawson, and Olivia escape from the trap and they smile for the camera

~When Felicia tries to eat Fidget (so funny!)

~When Basil tries to find out where Fidget’s shopping list came from

There are 4 words I have to say about “The Great Mouse Detective”: IT ROCKS OUT LOUD!!!!!!!! This is my #1 favorite Disney movie, and it always will be. TGMD is so underappreciated, and yet I can’t believe it has such a cult following! GMD is always gonna be the greatest movie ever!
