Fushigi Yuugi begins following the two Japanese school girls Miaka and Yui as they find a mysterious book, The Universe of the Four Gods, in a restricted part of the library. Things quickly start to pick up as they are both, in turn, sucked into the book as "priestesses" or "mikos" for different gods in the land of the book, a fictionalized version of ancient China.
The main heroine Miaka must gather the seven Suzaku Seishi in order to summon her god and get three wishes granted. This may seem simple, but there are many obstacles in her way. One is the formidable opponent Nakago of the Seiryuu Seishi. Eventually, Yui also becomes her enemy and dedicates herself to stopping Miaka's summoning of Suzaku. She has to go through more suffering along the way, including dreading the loss of the man she loves and being nearly killed more than once.
This show is filled with many characters and an imaginative world based off of an ancient one. The show is a rather long one, 52 episodes plus the OAVs, combining aspects of comedy, drama, romance, fantasy, and adventure. Though the show is slightly dated, it's a favorite among anime fans.

Main Characters:
Miaka Yuuki. VAs Kae Araki and Ruby Marlowe.
Though she bears great responsibility as the Priestess of Suzaku, Miaka doesn't seem like the type at all. She's an immature, whiny glutton who can't even stay awake during cram school. Luckily, she has nobler qualities in her, such as compassion and great bravery, which reveal themselves as she takes on her role in the book world more and more.
Yui Hongo. VAs Yumi Tôma and Wendee Lee.
Yui is Miaka's best friend since childhood and supposedly a genius. She gets sucked into the book, as well, but becomes the Priestess of Seiryuu, Miaka's enemy. She's taken advantage of by Nakago and others and blinded to her situation until it's too late.
Tamahome. VAs Hikaru Midorikawa and David Hayter.
Tamahome is the first Suzaku Seishi found in the book. He seems at first to be a miser who will do anything for money. However, like all characters in this show, he's more than he appears.
Hotohori. VAs Takehito Koyasu and Sparky Thornton.
Hotohori is the supremely powerful (and narcissistic) but isolated emperor of Konan, the land which Suzaku protects. He sees the coming of the Priestess as the welcomed end to his loneliness.
Nuriko. VAs Chika Sakamoto and Melissa Williamson.
Nuriko is the unbelievably strong member of the imperial consort, a selection of the most beautiful women from across Konan. After some initial troubles, Nuriko finally agrees to join Miaka and the others to help locate the rest of the seishi.
Chichiri. VAs Tomokazu Seki and Sean Mitchell.
Chichiri is the ever-smiling Buddhist monk who joins Miaka and the other seishi along their journey. A powerful ally, he has the fantastic powers of teleportation and transformation. His happy mask hides a more serious nature and a painful past.
Tasuki. VAs Nobutoshi Hayashi and James Penrod.
The first in line to be the leader of the Mount Reikaku bandits, Tasuki is more than a little reluctant to take his place as a Suzaku Seishi. He finally comes around and helps the others out as he can. His flame-throwing Tessen and spitfire attitude make him a formidable addition.
Mitsukake. VAs Kouji Ishii and Richard Epcar.
Mitsukake is a quiet but talented healer. (In fact, that's his special power.) Miaka and the seishi convince him to come out of a self-imposed exile in order to help save Konan. His constant companion is a small cat named Tama.
Chiriko. VAs Tomoko Kawakami and Zan.
Chiriko is a 13-year-old genius and the last of the Suzaku Seishi to be located. He doesn't seem very powerful, but the combination of his intelligence, courage, and loyalty to the Priestess aren't to be underestimated.
Nakago. VAs Tôru Furusawa and David Umansky.
Seemingly invincible, Nakago is the cold-hearted leader of the Seiryuu Seishi and the main antagonist in the show. He'll do anything, including betraying and using those who trust him, to accomplish his goals.
