This Anime series tells the story of Edward Elric and his little brother, Alphonse, who are on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone.
Ed and Al are the sons of a great alchemist named Hohenheim Elric, and both brothers inherited their father's amazing skill at manipulating objects. However, he went away when the boys were very young and their mother was left to raise them on her own with the support and aid of the neighboring Rockbell family. The boys lived a happy, peaceful existence until their lives were shattered when their beloved mother fell ill and passed away. The devastated little boys were left to fend for themselves with no sign that their father would return. They devoted themselves entirely to honing their alchemy abilities in the hopes of using the forbidden art of Human Transmutation to bring their mother back to them and make everything all right again. When the fateful day came, the boys' attempt at restoring their mother went horribly wrong, and they were forced to pay a terrible price. Edward lost his right arm and left leg, and Alphonse's entire body was destroyed. At the last moment, Edward was able to save his brother by safely attaching his soul to a nearby suit of armor. With all hope of regaining their happy lives gone and the crushing realization of the mistake they had made, the two brothers began a new quest to find the fabled stone and use it for a much more realistic goal: to return to being normal and whole.
Fullmetal Alchemist is an incredible series that very much deserves all the praise it has been given. All of its elements are uniformly excellent, but the best thing about this particular series is watching the beautiful relationship the brothers have. I have rarely seen a close sibling relationship portrayed so accurately before and it makes these two characters incredibly appealing. The ties that bind these brothers are tangible, and it is a welcomed change from the feuding siblings Anime usually portrays.

Main Characters:
Edward Elric VA: Vic Mignogna (Japanese: Romi Pak)
The elder Elric brother, Ed tends take charge and wear his heart on his sleeve. He's prone to losing his temper at the drop of a hat (especially if anyone calls him short!), but most of the time he's fairly quiet and introspective. The limbs he lost have been replaced with mechanical ones and this earned him the title of "The Fullmetal Alchemist" when he became the youngest state alchemist in history at age 12. He is considered a child prodigy, but all the things he has suffered have made him wise far beyond his years and a bit old before his time. His dedication to his younger brother is absolute.
Alphonse Elric VA: Aaron Dismuke (Japanese: Rie Kugimiya)
Al is the other half of the Elric Duo and a talented alchemist in his own right. As the younger brother, he tends to be much gentler and more passive than his excitable sibling. He's content to let his brother take charge, but he's quick to speak up whenever Ed starts to get out of line. Despite the fact that all that remains of him is his soul attached to a large suit of armor, Al has retained his humanity and sweet nature. He remains optimistic about their quest and holds his own by being extremely formidable in battle.
Winry Rockbell VA: Caitlan Glass (Japanese: Megumi Toyoguchi)
Winry is a tomboyish, outgoing girl who grew up next door to the Elrics and has been friends with the brothers since childhood. She comes from a long line of very talented mechanics and is learning to be one herself from her grandmother Panako. When Ed lost his limbs, she helped construct the Auto-Mail arm and leg he now has and does repairs on them whenever Ed is injured. Despite growing up with the brothers, Winry feels as if they often keep her at an arm's length.
Roy Mustang VA: Travis Willingham (Japanese: Toru Akawa)
Mustang is a State Alchemist and a colonel in the army. He bears the title "The Flame Alchemist" due to his ability to ignite the air using special gloves and the flames he creates in battle. Roy saw the destruction of the Ishbal War first hand and was forced to commit some atrocious acts that still haunt him. The experience led him to aspire to great things with plans to change the way the military operates. He is extremely smart and manipulative and seems to know at least a little bit about everything that is happening.
Maes Hughes VA: Sonny Straight (Japanese: Keiji Fjiwara)
Hughes is a friendly, jovial man with a very civilian air for a ranking officer of the military. He and Roy have been close friends since they went through officer training together and he understands his friend's drive to change things. Hughes is extremely devoted to his wife and baby daughter Alicia and would insist on showing everyone pictures all the time whether they want to see them or not. This often makes him seem like he's in his own little world, but he is extremely observant and astute. He befriended the Elric brothers when they first came to Central and helped them out as often as he could.
Scar VA: Dameon Clarke (Japanese: Ryotara Okiayu)
Known as "Scar" because of the mark on his face, this Ishbalan has made it his mission to kill State Alchemists and views them as an unnatural abomination. He is a deeply religious man, but seeing his own people massacred drove him to revenge against the military and its alchemists. He is particularly dangerous because he believes that he is on a holy, God-given mission. Edward is one of the few State Alchemists to have survived a confrontation with Scar and that has made him a primary target.
The Military
Riza Hawkeye VA: Colleen Clinkenbeard (Japanese: Michiko Neya)
Stone-faced and unemotional, First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye works as Mustang's aide and is one of his closest confidantes. She knows all of his grand plans and supports them completely. She keeps her cool in even the most intense situations and is an incredible shot.
Major Alex Louis Armstrong VA: Christopher Sabot (Japanese: Kenji Utsumi)
State Alchemist Major Armstrong is known as "The Strongarm Alchemist" and despite being a kind, emotional man, he's also macho and likes to take off his shirt to show off his manly physique. Although he served loyally in the Ishbal War, he's only a major and many suspect this is because of his issues with the men in charge. He's been looking out for the Elric Brothers ever since Hughes asked him to guard them from Scar.
Second Lieutenant Ross VA: ? (Japanese: Mitsuki Saiga)
Ross was in charge of providing security for Ed and Al in Central City. She and Ed locked horns at first, but eventually she came to be something of a protective caregiver for him, stirring him back into action whenever he felt depressed.
Scieszka VA: Gwendolyn Lao (Japanese: Naomi Wakabayashi)
Scieszka is an avid bookworm with an incredible photographic memory. After being fired from a Central Library Branch office for reading more than working, Ed got her a job working for Hughes. She took to her new boss immediately and remains extremely loyal to him and his family.
Fuhrer King Bradley VA: Ed Blaylock (Japanese: Hidekatsu Shibata)
As surpreme commander-in-chief of the military, Bradley holds the entire nation in the palm of his hand. He does always act the part but his charm and warmth seem to inspire absolute confidence and loyalty. Men and women at all levels of the military hierarchy support him unconditionally. However, there are those who have not forgotten the Ishbal War and they don't think quite so highly of their leader.
The Homunculi
Lust VA: Laura Bailey (Japanese: Yuko Sato)
The sultry Lust initially seems to be the leader of the group of artifical humans known collectively as the Homunculi. She scattered information about the Philosopher's Stone and the Red Water far and wide in the hopes of attracting an alchemist with the power to do the transmutations she and her fellow homunculi are incapable of. She is more than willing to kill and destroy anyone and anything to reach her goal.
Gluttony VA: Chris Cason (Japanese: Yasuhiro Takato)
As his name implies, Gluttony lives to eat and seems to be willing to follow Lust's orders as long as she allows him to consume the people and things who oppose her. He's amazingly quick for someone so fat and seemingly stupid and his ability to regenerate after an injury makes him an extremely dangerous opponent.
Envy VA: Wendy Powell (Japanese: Mayumi Yamaguchi)
Envy is the active agent in a number of secret plots and has the ability to alter his appearance to look like anyone or anything he wants. He holds a murderous personal grudge against Ed for an unexplained reason despite the fact that the two had never crossed paths until they first confronted each other in Central.
Greed VA: Chris Patton (Japanese: Junichi Suwabe)
Greed is a creature that even his fellow homunculi seem to greatly fear. When he is freed from where he was imprisoned, he immediately recruits three chimeras to be his henchmen. He acts independently from the other homunculi and is even more dangerous than they are. His charm and charisma easily draws others into his fold.
Sloth VA: Lydia Mackay (Japanese: Yoshino Takamori)
Sloth hides under the identity of Juliet Douglas, the secretary to the Fuhrer. She is the mastermind behind many of the militaries most barbaric campaigns, such as merciless persecution of the Ishbalians. Much about her remains a mystery, but she does bear a disturbing resemblence to Ed and Al's mother...
Wrath VA: ? (Japanese: Nana Mizuki) Wrath first appears in the series as a seemingly innocent, simple boy with amnesia on Yock Island. However, it isn't long before Ed and Al discover the horrific truth about his existence and his personal connection to them and their teacher, Izumi Curtis.
Other Characters
Trisha Elric VA: Lydia Mackay (Japanese: Yoshino Takamori)
Trisha is Ed and Al's beloved mother. She loved her sons dearly and raised them with great care and understanding. Although she was sick and missing her husband, she always kept a smile on her face for the sake of her children and did her best to make them happy. She encouraged their early experiements in alchemy. Her illness took a turn for the worse when Ed was just ten years old, and despite everyone's best efforts, she soon passed away.
Hohenheim Elric VA: ?
Hohenheim is the brothers' absent father. He is quite famous for his incredible skill at alchemy and is known to have done a great deal of research into the subject of the homunculi and their creation. However, his reasons for abandoning his wife and young sons remains a mystery and whatever they may be, Edward hates him for it.
Panako Rockbell VA: Juli Erickson (Japanese: Miyoko Aso)
Panako is Winry's grandmother and a master Auto-Mail Mechanic. Thanks to her, Winry was able to overcome the tragedy of her own parents' deaths and become a bright and talented young woman. However, she knows her granddaughter still has a lot to learn about more than one thing! She's even shorter than Ed and the two of them often get in good-natured insult contests.
Izumi Curtis VA: Christine M. Auten (Japanese: Shoko Tsuda)
Izumi is the one who taught Edward and Alphonse nearly everything they know about Alchemy. She took them in after their mother died and was an extremely harsh master, but her students became very skilled at an extraordinary rate. The brothers are frightened of her and she is very hard on them, but deep down she truly loves them and considers them her own sons. She has serious health problems and a very dark secret that only her husband Sig is aware of.
