Comments:

This movie did very little box office (as did most of Ralph Bakshi's films), but has become a cult classic, partly for the quality of the art, a collaboration between Ralph Bakshi and the famed fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. Also, the screenplay was written by two men who had done Conan comic book stories (Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas), and the background painters included the illustrator of the Dinotopia novels (James Gurney) and the painter Thomas Kinkade. This talent is evident in the simple dialog (which does not interfere with the clear, clean plot) and the lushly lovely backgrounds.

Like Bakshi's Lord of the Rings, this movie was rotoscoped, but the process works better in this film than in the former.

With Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta as the artistic talent behind this film, I didn't expect a Disney adventure. I got what I expected - an exciting story with plenty of action, but where the gore wasn't skimped and the clothing was almost non-existent. (I doctored a screen cap or two, and many scenes couldn't be put on this site even with doctoring!) This is not a movie for children! Nor for the easily offended or the faint of heart. Nevertheless, I enjoy it each time I see it.
