Fantasia 2000

Fantasia 2000 is a continuation of Walt Disney's ambitious dream of combining classical music with animation. He wanted the original FANTASIA to be a continuing process that would get a new segment added into it each year. This dream didn't come true in his lifetime, but now, decades later, Fantasia 2000 introduces us to new pieces of animated classics.

The movie, like its predecessor, consists of 8 short, individual segments. 7 of them are new, and one of the original segments, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is included as well. The music choices also include Beethoven's 5th, Otto Respighi's "Pines of Rome", George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue", Shostakovitsh' "Piano Concerto No. 2", "Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint Saens, Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" and "The Firebird Suite" by Igor Stravinsky.

The movie's segments vary in style, music and storytelling. Some are visually stunning to look at, some are stylistically original and some are there just to entertain and make us laugh. Fantasia 2000 is a great tribute to Walt's original idea.

Beethoven's 5th:

The Butterflies.

These are not butterflies in the traditional sense, just triangle-shaped abstract things. But they most resemble butterflies and they can fly.

Pines of Rome:

The Whale Baby.

This cute and playful little whale learns how to fly due to a mysterious star and goes through an amazing journey.

Flying whales.

A whole pack of whales, including the baby whale's parents, learn how to fly and soar into the clouds.

Rhapsody in Blue:

Duke the Riveter.

Duke works at a construction area, but dreams of being a drummer.

Rachel.

Rachel has a ton of hobbies that her parents shove in her face, but all she wants is quality time with her Mom and Dad.

Mom and Dad.

Mom and Dad don't have specific names, they are simply Rachel's mom and dad. They're always busy and never have time for their little daughter.

Jobless Joe.

Jobless Joe, like his namesake, is unemployed and he wishes he could find a job somewhere.

Flying John.

John is a grown man, but a child at heart. His dream is flying.

Killjoy Margaret.

Killjoy Margaret is John's wife. She can't stand any nonsense and is always trying to oppress her husband.

Foo Foo.

Foo Foo is Margaret's spoiled little dog.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice:

Mickey Mouse/the sorcerer's apprentice.

In one of his most famous roles, Mickey Mouse is the careless sorcerer's apprentice who wants to do magic, but things get a little out of control.

The Dancing Broomsticks.

Mickey brings life to an ordinary broomstick and makes him carry water for him, but afterwards he doesn't know how to make the broom stop and the place is soon filled with water. When Mickey tries to smash the broomstick to pieces, the pieces come back to life and each piece becomes a new broom.

Yen Sid.

The powerful and stern sorcerer himself who comes to the rescue just in time to save Mickey from the watermasses. If you're wondering about his name, try reading it backwards.

The Steadfast Tin Soldier:

The Tin Soldier.

This character is based on the beloved story of Hans Christian Andersen. The steadfast Tin Soldier is created with only one leg, but he stays brave and steady even at the face of danger. He is in love with a beautiful ballerina doll.

Ballerina.

The Tin Soldier's object of affection. At first the Soldier mistakes her to only have one leg like him, but even when he finds out this isn't true, she still cares about him.

Jack-in-the-Box.

The sinister Jack-in-the-box toy is in love with the Ballerina, but when he finds out she only cares for the Tin Soldier, he becomes jealous and tries to get rid of him.

Carnival of the Animals:

Our Hero.

This playful and mischevous flamingo wants to be an individual and keeps playing with his yo-yo, even though the other flamingoes try to make him exactly like them.

The Snotty Six.

These six flamingoes all act the same way and look alike and they can't stand anyone who tries to be different.

Pomp and Circumstance:

Donald Duck.

Another famous classical Disney character. In this humorous piece, Donald plays the role of Noah's assistant who tries to gather all the animals into the Arc before the great flood. In the process, he loses sight of his own mate and believes she has been wiped out by the flood when in fact she has been in the Arc all along.

Daisy Duck.

Donald's beloved mate. She also keeps missing Donald on the Arc and assumes him dead. Only after the Arc lands on the mountain, they finally find each other.

Noah.

Noah is Donald's employer, one of the only biblical Disney characters ever. We never get to see his face in the segment though.

Firebird Suite:

The Sprite of Spring.

The Spring Sprite brings life to trees and flowers after the long winter. She's innocent and playful and doesn't realize the evil that lies in the volcano's crater before it's too late.

The Elk.

The majestic and mysterious Elk is a friend of the Sprite.

The Firebird.

A ferocious spirit of the volcano, awoken by the Spring Sprite. The Firebird destroys everything in its way with burning flames and lava.
