FAKE

The brash and outgoing Dee Laytner and his partner and complete opposite, the kind and softspoken Randy "Ryo" Maclean, are New York City cops from the 27th precinct who have come to England for a vacation together. Dee has an ulterior motive in making the trip - he plans to use the time alone to seduce Ryo, something he's been trying to do since the day they met. However, even in a quiet hotel in a remote, beautiful English country setting, Dee can't seem to make any progress in breaking down Ryo's defenses.

This is partly because he doesn't get much of a chance before things start happening. First, the two discover a murdered woman in the lake behind the hotel. Then Bikky (Dee's nemesis) and Carol, two street children Ryo has semi-adopted, show up to spoil Dee's fun, followed by JJ, a fellow cop with a crush on Dee. As if that weren't enough, Dee and Bikky see the ghost of the hotel manager's long-dead young daughter, and a mysterious man hanging about the hotel turns out to be yet another cop from New York.

The mystery cop, Lt. Berkeley Rose, is privately investigating the murder of the woman found in the lake, which he ties to the hotel. It turns out that the woman was part Japanese, and Rose has discovered that several Japanese or part-Japanese tourists have disappeared from the area within the last few years. Dee realizes that Ryo, who is half-Japanese, could be in danger!

This OVA is a pretty faithful adaptation of one chapter of the popular seven-volume shonen-ai manga, the chief difference being the addition of two characters (Arisa and Cindy). The animation and art are good, and so is the music. Although part of the manga isn't appropriate for this website, the OVA is mostly just great fun. There is no real sex and little violence, and the characters from the manga are brought to life perfectly. Set within the framework of tragedy and murder in the lovely English countryside, the story of Dee's obnoxious and determined pursuit of the gentle and conflicted Ryo is both romantic and comic relief. The plot shifts effortlessly, anime-fashion, between the idiotically funny and the deadly serious on Dee and Ryo's busman's holiday. As a fan of the manga, I really enjoyed this OVA. I wish more had been made.

Main Characters:

Dee Laytner (VA Sandy Lang, Tomokazu Seki)
Brash, impulsive, and outgoing, Dee is a New York City cop who is supremely self-confident about everything except Ryo's feelings for him. He planned the vacation in England for the sole purpose of trying to seduce Ryo, but he handles all the danger that comes along much better than the interruptions caused by Bikky, Carol, and JJ.

Randy "Ryo" Maclean (VA Terrence Stone, Nobuo Tobita)
Ryo is Dee's half-Japanese partner. Gentle and softspoken, Ryo is modest enough to always be surprised by how many people are attracted to him. He has a kind heart, and took Bikky and Carol into his home when they were orphaned. Despite the way he seems, however, Ryo is not weak - he has courage and can think for himself.

Bikky (VA Destiny, Rica Matsumoto)
Bikky is a 10-year-old orphan who can be a real brat. He hero-worships Ryo and is determined to keep Dee away from him, which leads to some lively arguments with Dee. He also has feelings for his childhood friend, Carol.

Carol (VA Stevie Bloch, Wakana Yamazaki)
13-year-old Carol is a feisty pickpocket and orphan. Her thieving ways get her in trouble with Ryo and Dee. She, too, hero-worships Ryo, but she doesn't mind Dee's pursuit of him. She has feelings - and plans - for Bikky.

Other Characters:

At the hotel:

Leonard Henry (VA William Knight, Rokuro Naya)
Mr. Henry is the manager of the hotel, and is a calm, dignified man. He tragically lost his daughter five years ago.

Jaco (VA Anthony Mozdy, Mitsuru Ogata)
The hotel's only servant, Jaco cooks and acts as the porter. He was a street person taken in by Mr. Henry.

Arisa Brian (VA Zan, Kikuko Inoue)
A half-Japanese girl, Arisa is engaged to be married, but her fiance wasn't able to come on this trip, so Arisa brought her best friend, Cindy. Arisa befriends both Dee and Ryo.

Cindy Evans (VA Destiny, Akemi Okamura)
Arisa's best friend, Cindy is a cheerful, flirtatious girl who is attracted to Ryo.

Lt. Berkeley Rose (VA Steve Kramer, Masashi Ebara)
Investigating the murders as if it were a game, Lt. Rose irritates Dee. And when he shows he definitely prefers Ryo's company, that irritates Dee a lot more. A twist at the end brings Rose back into Dee's and Ryo's life, to Dee's dismay.

Maria Elizabeth Henry (VA Rio Natsuki)
Leonard Henry's daughter, Maria was killed five years before, when she was 13. She now haunts the hotel as a sad little ghost.

In New York's 27th precinct:

Chief Warren Smith (VA Anthony Mozdy, Yosuke Akimoto)
Dee's and Ryo's badgerlike boss, the Chief is a grumpy man with a short temper, and is not averse to pounding his errant detectives on their heads.

JJ Adams (VA Gary Gillett, Tetsuya Iwanaga)
A detective in the 27th precinct, he developed a huge crush on Dee when they were in the academy together, and he follows his idol to England.

Drake Parker (VA Bob Bobson, Kenichi Ono)
JJ's partner, Drake is a bit of a loser, but he can be shrewd. Like the rest of the squad, he likes to make fun of the Chief - when the Chief is not around to hear it.

Ted (VA Steve Kramer, Kazuhiro Nakata)
The fifth member of the squad, he's just as disrespectful toward the Chief as the rest of the group.
