This now (in)famous anime continues the legend of Son Goku from the previous series simply known as Dragonball. The fun loving and unusually strong boy, raised by his grandfather in the woods, is now a husband and father himself. And just when you think he's ready to settle down, trouble finds him yet again. And again, and again.
And these enemies are far more powerful than even he imagines. As the risks to his loved ones, the world and the universe keep building with each struggle. But his innocence and pure heart continually inspires his friends. Not to mention confounds many of his adversaries into tagging along with him, if only to see just what makes him tick. Until he eventually inspires the good within them as well. Often without them even realizing it.
The high adrenaline action is addictive. And the characters grow to become insanely powerful (the phrase "mass landscape destruction" was invented for this show). But the oftentimes bizarre humor keeps the series from taking itself too seriously anyway. In the end, though, you fall in love with the characters, and keep watching this show simply to find out what happens to them throughout their lives. And there is a lifetime of development in each of these characters that you can't see by just sampling an episode or two. Because of this, however, the show often gets written off by critics as pointless and insipid. (And badly animated. They can't all be Disney. ; ] ) But from the beginning to the end, a timeless message can be perceived about uncommon wisdom and unexpected greatness.

Main Characters:
Son Goku VAs: Masako Nozawa, Saffron Henderson, Stephanie Nadolny, Ian Corlett, Sean Schemmel
Goku is a Saiyan, originally named Kakkarott, sent to Earth as a baby to destroy all it's inhabitants. Instead, he has a pure heart and a childlike nature. And, having been raised in the wilderness, can seem naive and socially inept at times. But he also has no concept of what personal limitations are. And nothing makes him happier than challenging himself against strong opponents simply for the fun of it. So he is constantly pushing himself beyond all conventional boundaries.
Son Gohan VAs: Masako Nozawa, Saffron Henderson, Stephanie Nadolny, Kyle Hebert, Dameon Clarke
Goku's and Chichi's first child. He has his father's pure heart, but lacks the thrill of fighting. His true dream is to become a scholar. But Gohan has been gifted with a terrifying power, greater than any other character. And with it, comes the responsibility of protecting his world and loved ones. Unfortunately, he rarely has the courage to bring it forth. Unless he is angered into a rage, and only by seeing harm come to an innocent.
Vegeta VAs: Ryu Horikawa, Brian Drummond, Christopher Sabat
The prince of all Saiyans, Vegeta is proud and vicious to a fault. He was brought up to believe that no other Saiyan could possibly surpass him. But "Kakkarott" utterly humiliated him at their first meeting. Since then, he's been obsessed with growing more powerful and returning the favor. But the more time he spends with Goku and the others, the more he begins to realize there are more important things in life than pride.
Piccolo VAs: Toshio Furukawa, Scott McNeil, Christopher Sabat
Piccolo is the reincarnation of a "demon" that Goku killed as a child. In truth, he is a Namek and the evil half of Kami. He was once Goku's sworn enemy, but it was young Gohan who brought out the good in him. Though he may still seem cold, he loves Gohan deeply, and will protect him as obsessivly as any parent. Dignified, intense, and with an I.Q. through the roof, he is now considered the sage of all the fighters and Goku's most respected ally.
Krillin VAs: Mayumi Tanaka, Terry Klassen, Sonny Strait
Goku's best friend since childhood, Krillin is a midget monk who is the most powerful human on Earth. It may still be incomparable to a Saiyan, but his heart more than makes up for it. Though he is something of a comic relief character, he will stand by Goku's side and face every threat with him no matter how terrifying. And even if he's beaten, he'll get back on his feet and try again long after others would've given up.
Bloomer (Bulma) Briefs VAs: Hiromi Tsuru, Lalaina Lindberg, Tiffany Vollmer
Bulma is another one of Goku's childhood friends. She's not a fighter, but she is invaluable to the team for her technical genius. She can invent, operate and fix anything. From alien spaceships to androids. A good thing, since most of these guys would have trouble operating anything more complex than a toaster. She can be overbearing and egocentric most of the time, but that's what allows her to understand Vegeta better than anyone else.
Other Characters:
Master Roshi VAs: Kohei Miyauchi, Masaharu Satou, Ian Corlett, Michael Donovan, Peter Kelamis, Mike McFarland
The immortal Master Roshi is Goku's and Krillin's old master from years ago. He was known as the greatest martial artist who ever lived, until his students surpassed him. He still holds the title as the world's biggest pervert, however!
Future Trunks VAs: Takeshi Kusao, Eric Johnson
Coming from a dark alternate timeline, the future son of Bulma and Vegeta travels back in time to warn of the coming androids that would kill all the other fighters and most of humanity. Also, because Goku had died of a viral heart disease in his time, Trunks gave him the future cure so that he would survive to fight as well. He is usually serious and always polite. But is surprised to meet his cold hearted father.
Trunks Briefs VAs: Takeshi Kusao, Laura Bailey
This version of Trunks is from this timeline. But because he was raised in a peaceful world with his father still alive, he's a very different character. He is mischeivous and has a bit of an attitude problem. A self-proclaimed brat. But he shocks his father speechless by becoming a Super Saiyan at the age of eight. A level Vegeta himself had only achieved a few years earlier.
Son Goten VAs: Masako Nozawa, Kara Edwards
Goten is Goku's and Chichi's second son. He was concieved just before the Cell Game. And since Goku was beaten in that battle, Goten is the son he never had a chance to meet until years later. He is even more naive, cheerful and excitable than his father ever was. He's also more powerful. Like his best friend, Trunks, he becomes a Super Saiyan naturally at seven years old.
Chichi VAs: Naoko Watanabe, Laara Sadiq, Andrea Libman, Cynthia Cranz
Chichi is Goku's faithful wife. Also Gohan's and Goten's loving mother. She is a somewhat high strung woman and isn't afraid to tell the strongest warriors in the universe what-for. (Even Piccolo's afraid of her!) She is very protective of Gohan and pushes him to study and away from fighting. But, for some reason, isn't so restrictive with Goten.
Ox King VAs: Daisuke Gohri, Dale Wilson, Dave Ward, Mark Britten, Kyle Hebert
The Ox King is Chichi's father, and also a former student of Master Roshi. He rules over Mt. Frypan and, with his immense size, can be quite an imposing person when angry. But he's usually very cheerful and tries - unsuccessfully - to be a voice of reason for his daughter.
Tenshinhan (Tien) VAs: Suzuoki Hirotaka, Matt Smith, John Burgmeier
A former student of Master Roshi's rival. He was trained as an assassin, but upon meeting Goku, realized there ws no honor in that life. With his third eye, he can see things the others can't. And he may be more powerful than Krillin. But no one is quite sure since he eventually finds himself useless against the stronger opponents. Still, he will come to his friends' aid if they ever need a little extra power.
Chao-tsu VAs: Hiroko Emori, Cathy Weseluck, Monika Antonelli
Chao-tsu is Tenshinhan's friend and travels everywhere with him. They share a very strong bond not unlike brothers. He is probably the weakest of all the fighters, but he is a powerful telepath.
Yamcha VAs: Toru Furuya, Ted Cole, Christopher Sabat
Known as The Desert Bandit in his youth, Yamcha met a young Goku when he tried to rob him. He later fell in love with Bulma and became lifelong friends with them. But their relationship soon fell apart as he found it difficult to stay faithful. He is one of the top Human fighters in the world, but he, like Tenshinhan, eventually finds himself outdone by the Saiyans. (And Vegeta in particular.) He'll still step up to the plate if they need an extra pair of hands, however.
Puar VAs: Naoko Watanabe, Cathy Weseluck, Monica Antonelli
Yamcha's shapeshifting cat-like companion. Puar is always worried about Yamcha. And at the same time, often acts as his conscience... which he usually ignores.
Oolong VAs: Naoki Tatsuta, Doug Parker
As Bulma will testify to, Oolong is a pig. He's also a shapeshifter like Puar. But unlike Puar, never graduated shapeshifting school, and can only maintain a form for five minutes at a time.
Yajirobe VAs: Mayumi Tanaka, Brian Drummond, Mike McFarland
Yajirobe is... Yajirobe. He's pretty powerful as humans go, but he's also a complete coward. When asked to join a fight for the fate of his planet/universe/friends/etc. he'll usually make excuses as to why he can't. But every now and then, he'll surprise you.
Korin VAs: Ichiro Nagai, Mark Britten
Korin is a talking cat who is the god of martial arts. He lives atop a sacred tower and grows the magic Senzu Beans, which can restore one's health.
Kami VAs: Takeshi Aono, Michael Dobson, Christopher Sabat
An elder Namek who was sent to the Earth as an infant when his homeworld suffered great cataclysms. Centuries ago, he tried to purge the evil from his heart in order to become the new god of Earth. Instead, this evil became a separate entity who was later reborn in Piccolo. Since they are two halves of one being, if one dies, so will the other. Kami is also the original creator of Earth's dragonballs.
Dende VAs: Tomiko Suzuki, Hiro Yuuki, Paulina Gillis, Cevli Delgadillo
A Namekian child that Gohan saved from one of Freezer's minions. He is a Healer type, whereas Piccolo is a Fighter. He later fell in love with the Earth, and was happy to become its new god after Kami fused back with Piccolo.
Mr. Popo VAs: Toku Nishio, French Tickner, Christopher Sabat
An immortal genie-type being who lives on the Sanctuary and assists all the Kamis through time. That is his only purpose in life, and he tends to get depressed if there is no Kami to keep him company.
King Kai VAs: Joji Yanami, Don Brown, Sean Schemmel
King Kai is the god who watches over the northern quadrant of the galaxy, where Earth resides. He's the one who taught Goku the Kaioken, the Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb), and a lot of really corny jokes.
Juuhachigou (Android 18) VAs: Miki Itou, Meredith McCoy
Yes, 18 is her name. She was once a human until Dr. Gero enhanced her into a killing machine set toward Goku. But she and her brother, 17, turned on him. She later marries Krillin and has a daughter, Marron.
Mr. Satan (Hercule) VAs: Daisuke Gohri, Chris Rager
Mr. Satan (Pronounced "sah-Tahn") is a world-class martial arts champ. Which means, as normal martial artists go, he can't be beat. ...and don't he know it! But he's never before seen or heard of the concept of chi, one's life force energy that Goku and the others use. When he sees them flying or using energy attacks, he's convinced it's either a trick or he's dreaming!
Videl Satan VAs: Yuko Minaguchi, Kara Edwards
Mr. Satan's daughter who goes to the same highschool as Gohan. She's a lot stronger (and more intelligent) than her father, and works with the city's police force to catch criminals. When she correctly deduces Gohan to be the superhero Great Saiyaman, she blackmails him into teaching her how to channel her chi.
Freezer (Freiza) VAs: Ryuusei Nakao, Pauline Newstone, Linda Young
A shape-shifting, intergalactic tyrant who enslaved the Saiyans. He later destroyed them and their world out of fear of the legendary Super Saiyan emerging, capable of defeating him.
Cell VAs: Norio Wakamoto, Dameon Clarke
The creation of the scientist Dr. Gero. He is a bioandroid made with the genetic codes of almost all the great fighters and posesses all their abilities. But he can only achieve his perfect form by 'absorbing' the androids 17 and 18.
Majin Buu VAs: Kouzou Shioya, Josh Martin
A strange and childlike creature made entirely of evil magic. Created by the wizard Bibidi, and resurrected by the wizard's son, Babidi.
Races and Worlds:
Saiyans
A violent, but nearly extinct, warrior race. After Freezer destroyed their homeworld, Vegeta, there were only four left: Kakarrott (now known as Goku); Goku's brother, Radditz; Prince Vegeta; and the prince's servant, Nappa.
Saiyans become more powerful the more they fight, and their power is multiplied if they are revived from the brink of death. They are also known for eating truckloads of food in one sitting.
The ancient legend of the Super Saiyan is the next evolutionary step in their species. In which a saiyan warrior's dark hair turns gold, their eyes turn green, and their power is thought to be unstoppable in the universe. Goku was the first to achieve this level through his extreme anger toward Freezer.
Humans
A relatively simple people who live on the planet Earth. They aren't known to be very powerful, on a fighting, magical, or even technological scale. But compared with many alien races they are a kind, if often selfish and somewhat crazy, people.
The Earth istelf, however, is considered one of the most beautiful and abundant worlds in the cosmos. It is also one of the most unlucky, as evil beings from all over the universe seem drawn to it for some odd reason.
Nameks
A humanoid race that seems to have evolved from slugs. They are green-skinned with antennae, and pointed ears. They are also asexual, and can reproduce on their own.
They are a gentle, technologically advanced people. And each Namek is born with specialized magical abilities, such as fusion and limb regeneration for Fighters, and the ability to instantly heal anyone from near death for Healers. Some can even form what are known as Dragonballs. Seven magic spheres that are scattered all over the planet, and can grant anyone from one to several wishes, depending on their creator.
Their world, also called Namek, was a large planet with blue grass; a green sky; many oceans and lakes and, with three suns, there was no night. The planet recently experienced cataclysmic climate changes which nearly drove the Nameks extinct. One survived, however, and began repopulating the species to about a hundred before he died. The planet was later destroyed when Freezer blew it up in an attempt to kill Goku. The people were transported to Earth, where they used their Dragonballs to wish for a similar planet to settle on and continue their peaceful lives.
Deities
These are the gods of the Dragonball universe. For the most part, they are as mortal as anyone else, but they are very powerful and must be pure of heart. They work toward these positions like any job, and there are several ranks among them.
The various lower deities live on the worlds as we do, and watch over different aspects of that world. Above them, is the "Kami". The god whose job it is to watch over each planet from a hidden floating sanctuary. Then, there are higher gods and demons who manage the afterlife. From there, we have the "King Kai"s, who each watch over a quadrant of the galaxy: North, East, South and West. These kings then must answer to a "Grand Kai".
The highest among them all is the "Supreme Kai", The king of the king of the gods of the gods. He is universally considered the most respected and revered of all beings.
There may just be a position above even them, but no one has ever seen a being quite that powerful...
