Daisuke Niwa is a normal 14-year-old boy who has a terrible crush on a girl at his school. Or...so he thinks he's normal. The truth is, on Daisuke's 14th birthday, it's revealed that he has a special DNA gene within him - whenever he sees a picture of his crush, Risa Hirada, he magically transforms into the legendary Phantom Thief, Dark Mousey! His mother and grandfather explain to him that the Niwa family has carried the Curse of Dark for ages, and on each male's 14th birthday they gain the ability to transform into Dark when they see a picture of their "sacred maiden". Dark and Daisuke's task is to steal artwork throughout the city so it can be sealed and purified, and they often have to do this with the police force watching and the city tuned in to the thefts on the air, since Daisuke's grandfather sends annoucements out! The only way for Daisuke to stop transforming into Dark to steal artwork is to win his sacred maiden's heart.
The trouble is, Daisuke's crush isn't interested in him romantically...and worse, she's in love with his alter ego, Dark! Between trying to avoid transforming and Dark wanting to surface to taunt Daisuke and lead Risa on, poor Daisuke isn't sure what to do. Not to mention his mother keeps sending him out to steal art, and then on top of that, his mysterious classmate Satoshi Hiwatari seems to know way more than he should about Daisuke and Dark! What's a 14-year-old boy to do??
The best thing about D. N. Angel is the gorgeous artwork throughout the series. The animation is simply stunning. The music is also beautiful, and almost all the characters are well developed and have plenty of screen time. The story flows fairly smoothly, and the only disappointing things are Freedert's story being over-dramatized and that the series seems a bit rushed at the end, with several things left hanging. Overall however, it's highly recommended, and has plenty of comedy, romance, mystery, suspense , action and serious moments.
