Death Note

The world of the death gods is grey and dull, and many of the death gods barely know why they even exist anymore. Out of boredom, one of them, Ryuk, drops his Death Note into the human world and announces to his comrades that he's going to retrieve it.

In the human world, a Japanese college student, Light Yagami, mourns the current state of the world which in his opinion has been turned rotten by all the crime and corruption. By accident he stumbles upon Ryuk's Death Note and reads the instructions written inside: "The human whose name is written in this notebook shall die."

Light imagines it to be a joke, but takes the notebook with him anyway. As much as he tells himself he doesn't believe in it, he experiments with the notebook by writing down the names of a few criminals announced on the news. As the criminals die sudden and unexpected deaths soon afterwards, Light becomes convinced the notebook is real. He is soon visited by Ryuk, who instead of demanding his notebook back tells Light it now belongs to him. Light reveals his plan to Ryuk: he's going to use the Death Note to purge the world of evil, sparing only those he deems good and deserving of life. His ultimate goal is to rule his new, bright world as a god himself.

As Light, now known in the media as Kira ("Killer"), keeps killing off criminals, a special investigation group is set up, led by the mysterious master detective known simply as L. L is the only thing standing in Kira's way, so Kira must get close enough to find out L's real name in order to kill him. Kira and L soon prove to be equally matched in intelligence, and a blazing battle of wits ensues as both sides keep trying to figure out each other's next move while always trying to stay one step ahead.

Death Note is an exciting and intense series, filled with cliffhangers and plot twists that keep the viewer on the edge of their seat, and has an interesting, appealing cast of characters. The question of who will ultimately win, Kira or those who oppose him, is never as clear-cut and predictable as one might think and the suspense remains until the very end.

Main Characters:

Light Yagami/Kira. Japanese VA: Mamoru Miyano. English VA: Brad Swaile.

Light is a serious, straight-A student who decides to use the Death Note to cleanse the world of evil. He is highly intelligent and determined, going to extremes and beyond to prevent anyone ever catching him. He even joins the Kira investigation team at some point, simultaneously working against himself, trying to track down Kira, and trying to erase all suspicions directed at him.

L. Japanese VA: Kappei Yamaguchi. English VA: Alessandro Juliani.

L is the world's three greatest detectives - two under different aliases. Although his strange habits and disheveled appearance might not lead one to believe so, he is a genius. He always sits in a hunched position, claiming it helps his deduction skills and is always eating sweet things like desserts and fruit. Until the Kira case, he had never shown his face to other people and no-one knows his real name.

Ryuk. Japanese VA: Shido Nakamura. English VA: Brian Drummond.

Ryuk is the death god, or shinigami, whose Death Note Light is using. He follows Light everywhere like a shadow, preferring to spend time in the human world rather than his own because he thinks humans are amusing. Ryuk isn't on either Light's or L's side, he's not good or evil, he's simply an observer. He does give Light some advice from time to time in exchange for apples, which he has a fondness for.

Misa Amane. Japanese VA: Aya Hirano. English VA: Shannon Chan-Kent.

Misa found a Death Note dropped by a different shinigami who told her of a deal: if she wanted to, she could trade her own eyes for those of a death god which would allow her to see a person's name just by looking at them. Misa can thus kill more easily than Light and is therefore useful to him. She doesn't mind, as she's completely devoted to Kira and his cause. Her parents were killed when she was younger and the murderer was eventually released. Soon afterwards, Kira killed the criminal, earning Misa's eternal gratitude and love.

Rem. Japanese VA: Kimiko Saito. English VA: Colleen Wheeler.

Misa's death god who made a deal with her and traded her shinigami eyes with Misa. Rem took a fondness to Misa after she witnessed another shinigami die in order to save Misa's life. Shinigami can't die unless they use their Death Notes to increase, rather than decrease, a human's lifespan. Now Rem serves as Misa's protector.

The special Kira investigation group:

Soichiro Yagami. Japanese VA: Naoya Uchida. English VA: Chris Britton.

The chief of police and a notable member of the special investigation group in charge of hunting Kira. He is also Light's father, and after L expresses suspicion that Light may in fact be Kira, Mr. Yagami is constantly torn between his sense of duty to the law and to his family.

Tota Matsuda. Japanese VA: Ryo Naito. English VA: Vincent Tong.

Matsuda is one of the youngest members of the group. While he's just as dedicated to the cause as his colleagues, he's often more excitable and naive with a tendency to act before thinking.

Shuichi Aizawa. Japanese VA: Keiji Fujiwara. English VA: Trevor Devall.

Aizawa is serious and dedicated to the group's cause although he sometimes expresses concern over L's methods. He is among the first of the regular group members who begin to suspect Light of being Kira.

Kanzo Mogi. Japanese VA: Kazuya Nakai. English VA: John Murphy.

Mogi acts as Misa Amane's manager in order to keep close watch on her.

Hirokazu Ukita. Japanese VA: Hidenobu Kiuchi. English VA: Jeremy From.

Ukita is killed early on in the series by Misa Amane (aka the "second Kira").

Hideki Ide. Japanese VA: Hideo Ishikawa. English VA: Brian Dobson.

Ide is one of the first to remain working on the Kira case even after the chief of police warns his team that it may cost them their lives. However, Ide does not trust L and refuses to work with him and instead continues to hunt down Kira from the outside as a member of the police force. Later on he does join the special investigation group.

Other characters:

Watari. Japanese VA: Kiyoshi Kobayashi. English VA: French Tickner.

L's assistant who provides logistics to the investigation team. Prior to the setting up of the group, Watari was the only person in direct contact with L and the only one who had the ability to speak with him. He is also the founder of Wammy's House.

Aiber. Japanese VA: Takuya Kirimoto. English VA: ???.

A professional con-man hired by L to assist the group. Aiber is a talented actor and can obtain valuable information under a number of different aliases.

Wedy. Japanese VA: Miki Nagasawa. English VA: ???.

Wedy is a professional burglar who was called in by L for her skills. She helps capture the murderer within the Yotsuba Group by installing hidden bugs and cameras inside the Yotsuba building.

Near. Japanese VA: Noriko Hidaka. English VA: ???.

L's successor, a gifted young boy who grew up in Wammy's House, the orphanage founded by Watari. Despite being highly intelligent, he still has a thing for playing with toys and solving puzzles.

Mello. Japanese VA: Nozomu Sasaki. English VA: ???.

Mello was the second candidate to being L's successor but upon realizing Near was more likely to be chosen over him, the two become rivals and continue to hunt Kira down separately. Mello is much more bold in his methods, even going so far as to kidnap Light's sister in order to obtain the Death Note. He is often seen eating chocolate.

Raye Penber. Japanese VA: Hideo Ishikawa. English VA: Michael Adamthwaite.

A member of the FBI group sent to Japan by the US government to investigate the Kira case. Raye Penber is the first to get on Light's tail, so Light eliminates him.

Naomi Misora. Japanese VA: Naoko Matsui. English VA: Tabitha St. Germain.

Raye Penber's fiancee, a former FBI agent who starts investigating on her own when Raye gets killed after a suspicious busjacking incident. The information she has could prove vital to the police, so Light is determined to get to her first and eliminate her.

Teru Mikami. Japanese VA: Masaya Matsukaze. English VA: ???.

Chosen by Light as an accomplice out of hundreds of Kira supporters. Mikami's utter devotion and admiration of Kira's principles convinced Light that Mikami's ideals were close enough to his to understand exactly how important Kira's mission is. Mikami has an unshakable sense of righteousness and is convinced Kira is truly a god among men. So Light passes his Death Note to Mikami in order to ward off suspicion away from himself and still keep up the rate of criminals dropping dead. Mikami also trades his eyes for Ryuk's, enabling him to see the names of people just by looking at them.

Kiyomi Takada. Japanese VAs: Masumi Okamura & Maaya Sakamoto. English VA: ???.

Kiyomi Takada was Light's classmate and girlfriend during their college years. She later becomes a popular TV announcer and a supporter of Kira. Once Light contacts her and reveals to her that he is Kira, she becomes his accomplice and mistress, much to Misa's annoyance.

Yotsuba Group. Japanese VAs: Issei Futamata, Eiji Hanawa, Hirofumi Nojima, Rintaro Nishi, Hiroyuki Yokoo, Masaki Aizawa, Kiyoyuki Yanada & Yukitoshi Tokumoto.

A group consisting of eight businessmen working for the Yotsuba Corporation. One of their members has mysteriously obtained a Death Note and since the rest of the group doesn't know which one of their rank it is, they all play along and meet weekly to discuss how best to use the Death Note to make profit for their company.
