Code Lyoko

Code Lyoko is a French animated series featuring both conventional animation and CGI animation. It was produced by Antefilms during the first season and then produced by MoonScoop, both in association with the France 3 television network and Canal J.

Code Lyoko is about a group of four boarding school students, enrolled at Kadik Junior High School, named Jeremie, Ulrich, Odd, and Yumi. They discover a supercomputer in an abandoned factory, which contains a virtual world named Lyoko, a girl named Aelita, and a megalomaniacal digital entity named XANA. With the help of Aelita, the group of friends work to defeat XANA and his insane plans for world domination, all the while dealing with personal problems at school.

With its blend of traditional and computer animation, interesting plot and characters, and well-done action scenes, Code Lyoko became a great success for Cartoon Network when it aired in the USA, spanning four seasons and a prequel TV special.

Main Characters:

Jeremie Belpois - A typical nerd, Jeremie is the one who first discovers and activates the supercomputer. Falling in love with Aelita, he is determinned to devirtualize her so that he can shut down the computer and end XANA's reign of terror. Jeremie is the leader of the group, but never goes to Lyoko himself. He instead sits at the supercomputers' controls and gives his friends guidance, though half the time they can't understand the words he uses. While prone to obsessing over his work and even causing more trouble than he wishes to fix, Jeremie is overall a very good leader and friend.

Aelita Stones - Aelita is a mysterious virtual girl living in Lyoko, who has power of the towers that control it and can thus thwart XANA's attacks. Throughout the first season, Jeremie works desperately to devirtualize her into the real world, which he ultimatley succeeds at. Now posing as Odd's cousins at Kadik, she gets more and more involved with unraveling her own mysterious past and connection to Lyoko. Though at first gentle and naive, Aelita grows to be spunkier and stronger as time goes on. As a Lyoko warrior, Aelita can shoot out pink energy blasts or energy fields, as well as alter the landscape she is in through singing. She later gains the ability to fly.

Ulrich Stern - An unhappy and introverted boy, Ulrich joins the cause of the group for his own personal gain at first but gradually becomes loyal to the cause for the cause. Ulrich is the athletic star of Kadik and a hearthrob to many girls, including the relentless Sissy, but he only has eyes for Yumi, but can't express his feelings for her and often clashes with the more outgoing William for her affection. He and Odd are roommates and, despite a rocky start, they have become good friends, although they still have their disagreements from time to time. As a Lyoko warrior, Ulrich is a samurai who wields a sword (later two swords) and posseses incredible speed.

Odd Della Robia - The jokester of the group, Odd never seems to take things as seriously as the rest. With a love for food, art, and his dog Kiwi, Odd is considered a true eccentric. He considers himself a ladies' man, but can never seem to win himself a girl. Odd doesn't seem to get along well with Sissy, but it becomes increasingly obvious that this is more or less due to their similarities rather than their differences. While his many flaws constantly cause trouble for the group, Odd always manages to make up for things in the end. As a Lyoko warrior, Odd is a strange, cat-like creatre who can shoot out arrows from his wrists.

Yumi Ishiyama - The oldest and most mature of the group, Yumi is a girl of Japanese descent. She does not board at Kadik like the rest of the group, instead living with her parents and her annoying younger brother Hiroki. While normally calm and focused, Yumi can be stubborn and tempermental at times. She is also conflicted over her feelings for both her friend Ulrich Stern and her classmate William Dunbar. As a Lyoko warrior, Yumi is a ninja who uses iron fans in combat.

William Dunbar - A rebellious and outgoing new student, William is Yumi's classmate. He is in love with her and thus is Ulrich's rival for her feelings. When things go rough for the heroes, they reveal their secret to William and initiate him into the group. Unfortuently, he becomes possesed by XANA and is transformed into XANA's avatar, serving as the group's arch enemy for the final season. As a Lyoko warrior, William carries a large, extremely powerful sword capable of destroying an opponent in one blow. Once he becomes XANA's avatar, he can manipulate smoke as well as control XANA's monsters.

Sissy Delmas - Daughter of Kadik's principal, Sissy is a snobbish girl who looks down upon other students. As such, she is an enemy to the group and constantly gets in their way, often trying to expose their secret. Her cronies are Herve and Nicholas, who were originally simply her stalkers but whom she made her "gang" in order to further serve her purposes. It becomes clear throughout the show that Sissy isn't a bad person at heart and actually wants to be accepted into Jeremie's group, especially by Ulrich, whom she is in love with. Thus, the relationship between her and the group gradually gets better, particularly with Odd, whom may have romantic feelings for her.

Jim Morales - The physical education teacher of Kadik. Jim is a militant but rather dull-witted man who is always suspicious of the group and their activities. At first he often tried to uncover their secret, but stopped after they saved him from being fired by the principal. Jim has had many jobs and occupations in the past, or so he claims, but never wants to elaborate on them, always responding with "I'd rather not talk about it".

XANA - XANA is the main computer program controlling Lyoko and the Supercomputer. He is evil and desires to take over the world, using all abilities at his disposal to do so. His main weapon is his specter program, which creates smoke-like "ghosts" that he can use to possess something in the real world. At first, these specters could only possess electrical devices. But as time passed, XANA grew stronger and his specters could possess animals and even humans, and ultimately could create forms all on their own! At the height of his power, XANA gains William Dunbar as a permanent avatar to use against his hated enemies, the Lyoko warriors.

Franz Hopper - The mysterious creator of Lyoko, XANA, and the Supercomputer.
