One day, a young girl named Emily Elizabeth Howard adopts a small red puppy that she names Clifford. Emily Elizabeth gives the puppy lots of love and he begins to grow...until he's the size of a two story house! With such a big dog, Emily's parents decide it's best to move from their city home to Birdwell Island where there's much more room for Clifford to live.
The islanders are bit scared of Clifford at first, but they learn just how friendly he is. Many of them befriend Emily and her parents. And of course, Clifford find some dogs to befriend too!
The series was adapted from Norman Bridwell's classic children's book series. Many episodes have a moral to them that Clifford and his friends learn from their daily adventures.

Clifford is a huge dog with a big heart. He always lends a helping paw when he can. Sometimes his massive size causes trouble though.

Emily Elizabeth is Clifford's owner. She is almost always happy and she thinks Clifford is the best dog ever.

Cleo is a purple poodle who is one of Clifford's good friends. She can be bossy at times, even though she often doesn't realize it.

The animated series captures the fun of the Clifford books while adding some of their own touches. Clifford and his dog friends speak to each other in the series, but in the books, they just bark. Dogs like Cleo and T-Bone are made Clifford's constant pals. In the books, Clifford has a group of dog friends, but they weren't named and were not always the same. In the series, the characters' home is called Birdwell Island, a take on author Norman Bridwell's name. The books never named Clifford's home. The series also gives Emily Elizabeth some constant peers like Jetta and Charlie.
Are these nitpicks? No, actually. These are minor changes and actually hold things together better as a series.
Sure this series is meant for preschoolers, I will admit that. But Clifford was one of my favorite children's book characters. I had so many of the books. (Still have a few too!) So, for that reason, this series has a special place in my heart. I can enjoy it for childhood memories' sake.
