Candy Candy is based on a manga series. There were actually two series on Candy, the OVA and the series, there are some minor diferences in both. The story is set somewhere around the 19th century and tells of an orphan girl, Candy, who grows up through many hardships to an independent and cheerful young lady.
Candy was found on the steps of an orphanage called "Pony's Home" as a baby, along with another baby named Annie. The two girls grow up together and become best friends but one day Annie is adopted and they have to be separated. Candy is very sad to lose her best friend and while she is crying on a nearby hill, she suddenly sees a handsome young boy in a Scottish outfit standing in front of her. Candy thinks he looks like a prince, and after that day, whenever she is sad, she only thinks of her handsome prince. Candy is later adopted to a wealthy family to keep company for the cocky girl Eliza and her brother Neil. They're both very mean to Candy and there are times when she just wants to run away back to Pony's Home, but one day she meets Anthony, a boy that looks exactly like her mysterious prince....
Candy Candy is an ongoing drama with lots of turns and twists. It seems that almost everyone in the series falls for Candy's positive and bright nature, as well as her looks. The animation stands the test of time well and the story is engaging. I would recommend to stay far, far away from the horrible English dub though, in case you truly want to enjoy the story.

Main Characters:
Candy. VA Minori Matsushima.
Candy is a cheerful and friendly girl who also has the tendency to sometimes break the rules in the name of fun. Through all the difficulties in her life, she never loses hope.
Anthony. VA Kazuhiko Inoue.
Anthony is Candy's first love, he looks a lot like her 'prince'. He lost his mother when he was young and he loves roses just like she did.
Annie. VA Mami Koyama.
Annie is Candy's best friend. She is adopted to a wealthy family, but because her new parents are afraid to let people know she's an orphan, they force her to cut off her friendship with Candy. Later on the two meet again and renew their friendship.
Terry. VA Kei Tomiyama.
Terry is an actor and has a mysterious past that he doesn't want to reveal to anyone. He and Candy become a lot more than friends, but she decides to let him go after a girl named Susanna who is in love with Terry almost commits suicide because she can't have him.
Albert. VA Makio Inoue.
Albert is a stranger Candy first meets in a forest after being saved by him from plunging into a waterfall. Candy and Albert meet lots of times in the strangest places, but he's very mysterious and often leaves before saying goodbye.
Other Characters:
Archie.
Anthony's cousin who grew up with him, as well as Stear.
Stear.
Stear is Anthony's and Archie's cousin who likes to invent things (with not much success).
Neil.
Neil is Eliza's brother and together they cause a lot of trouble for Candy.
Eliza.
Eliza is Neil's sister and she has a crush on Anthony, which only makes her hate Candy more when Anthony only has eyes for Candy.
Aunt Elroy.
Aunt Elroy is the head of the Leagan family and she takes care of Anthony, Stear and Archie. She is very stern and serious.
Miss Pony.
Miss Pony is the keeper of Pony's Home. She is like the mother Candy never had.
Sisiter Maria/Lynn.
Sister Maria is often scolding Candy for being naughty and she's more strict on her than Miss Pony, but she still loves her like her own daughter.
Krin.
Candy's little pet raccoon.
