In the 18th Century, a lovely peasant called Belle feels restless and unsatisfied about her life in a small French village. Dreaming of adventures, she buries both her nose and mind in the books - a very unusual behavior in a place where women are only expected to marry and have children! But everything changes when her father, an inventor, leaves to take part in a fair. He gets lost in the forest and is forced to ask for shelter into a sinister castle, where he is greeted by amazing talking objects. Unluckily, there lives also a most sullen Beast, who locks the "trespasser" in a dungeon.
In fact, Beast and the objects are, respectively, a bratty spoiled prince and his servants who were cursed for the lad's selfishness. To break the spell he'll have to love someone and be loved in return, before the last petal of his magic rose falls. So when Belle comes along and offers herself instead her father, he takes it promptly. More a guest than a prisoner, the girl quickly befriends the servants and starts even to enjoy her new life. She still abhors the Beast, more for his wild ways than exactly for his appearance; yet helped by the magic objects (and a pack of hungry wolves), both girl and creature learn to trust each other, and develop a warm friendship. While Beast falls for Belle, he slowly changes, too; she, by her turn, learns to see the real man beneath the fur.
Based upon Madam Le Prince de Beaumont's famous fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast was the first animated movie to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Movie (91), and had an equally successful adaptation for Broadway stages (94). In 2002, it was re-released with the addition of an number taken from the Broadway version, Human Again - just an extra goodie to a movie that never lost its charm. The scenery is breathtaking, the 50-60s style musical numbers delicious, and the characters quite charismatic. There is lots of humor, some thrilling scenes, and a sensitive message about the value of tolerance.

The Main Characters:
Belle
Va: Paige O'Hara
Belle is a book-loving, spirited girl whose wish for a different life unexpectedly comes true when she rides to look for her father lost in the forest. She is sweet, outspoken, confident and a little impulsive, too.
Beast
Va: Robby Benson
The not-so-ugly Beast is actually a despotic prince punished for refusing shelter to an old woman (in fact a beautiful sorcerer in disguise) in a winter night. He masks his misery whether with cynism or terrible ferocity; deep down, however, he is timid and unsure. It's Belle who pulls his best side out - a side which probably not even he imagined could exist...
Gaston
Va: Richard White
Another guy who's not what he seems. Adored as a "hero" by the villagers, the hunter Gaston is in fact a sexist, boastful, egomaniacal (though very amusing) brute who shoots wild animals just to exhibit his accuracy. Gaston's obsession with himself has only one parallel, his one with Belle, "the prettiest, thus best girl in town". So when she refuses to marry him, he tries to blackmail her through her father, then goes insane when he discovers that she prefers a monster.
Lumiere
Va: Jerry Orbach
Lumiere is a jovial, gallant chandelabra whom never loses a chance to have fun, or tease Cogsworth. A ladies man, he teaches Beast how to win Belle's affection, but his hints might have disastrous results if misinterpreted.
Cogsworth
Va: David Ogden Stiers
He is a usually cranky English butler turned into a mantle clock. As "head of the household" (at least officially), Cogsworth is fussy and attached to rules, beyond a little presumptuous - which especially irritates Lumiere. Otherwise, he has an ironic sense of humour, and a heart much softer than he would admit.
Mrs. Potts
Va: Angela Lansbury
This caring housekeeper-teapot is the voice of reason for her fellow staff and even for the Beast himself. It's she who comforts Belle from her grief for getting trapped, and is as concerned about the girl's welfare as about her own son's.
Maurice
Va: Rex Everhardt
The father of Belle is a friendly but awkward inventor whose inventions do not always work, which makes him the object of the townspeople's scorn. Oblivious to this, he puts all heart to improve his life and Belle's through his work, but his ingenuity gets them both in lots of trouble.
Le Fou
Va: Jesse Corti
The very devoted sidekick of Gaston. Le Fou, as his name (The Fool, in French) suggests, is a buffoon: he's always stuck on the hunter's heels in order to please him and share a bit of his glory. But everything he gets in return are "tender" cuffs and conks.;)
Chip
Va:Bradley Pierce
The playful, curious 5 year old son of Mrs. Potts. He is very fond of Belle, and even not understanding well what happens around him, is quite aware of her importance for the whole castle.Other Characters
Bookseller
Va:Alvin Epstein
The only friend of Belle in town. He is so generous that he lends her his books free, and even gives her the one she likes most.
Monsieur Darke
Va: Tony Jay
The corrupt director of the Asylun of Loons. He is paid by Gaston in order to lock Maurice up unless, of course, Belle agrees to marry the hunter.
Bimbettes
Vas:Mary Kay Bergman & Kath Soucie
These funny airheaded blondes worship Gaston (although he ignores them) and think Belle is crazy for dismissing him. Pity they don't appear much.
Madam La Grand Bouche
Va:Jo Ann Warley
An exhuberant chambermaid-wardrobe who lives in Belle's room. She has everything needed to dress a girl as a princess - or an aggressive villager in drag!
Phillipe
The skittish, still (reasonably) loyal horse of Maurice and Belle. Like the rest of the animals in this movie (Beast doens't count), Phillipe behaves realistically. Frightened, he abandons Maurice when the wolves show up but runs back home after Belle, and they end up finding Beast's castle.
The Wolves
Fierce and ever hungry, they attack Maurice when he gets lost in the forest, pushing him to the castle. They also attack Belle when she runs off there, but are defeated by the Beast. (I'd say that they unintentionally put a Cupido on, tee-hee.)
Fifi
Va:Kimmy Robertson
The coquet girlfriend of Lumiere, whose personality much resembles his.
Poochstool
An energetical dog turned into a...footstool.
Favorite Quotes:Gaston: The whole town's talking about it. Is not right for a woman to read - soon, she starts getting ideas... and thinking.
Belle: Gaston, you're positively primeval.
Gaston: Why thank you, Belle.Gaston: Here, picture this. A rustic hunting lodge, my latest kill roasting on the fire, and my little wife, massaging my feet, while the little ones play with the dogs. We'll have six or seven!
Belle: Dogs?Beast(smirking at the filthy cell):You wanna, you wanna stay in the tower?
Belle: What's up there?
Cogsworth: Where? Up there? Nothing. Absolutely nothing of interest at all in the West Wing. Dusty, dull, very boring.
Belle(lights up her face): Oh, so that's the West Wing.
Lumiere:(To Cogsworth) Nice going!Monsieur Darke: Oh, that's despicable. I love it!

This is sort of a parody from BatB's poster of 91 I did. Those kids are characters of a Braziliam comic - heard it was published in EUA, but I don't know its name in English. I thought it would be funny to put it beside the original poster which inspired it.
