Bambi II

This film isn't a sequel to the original, but a "midquel". It takes place between the time the Great Prince takes Bambi under his care and the time Bambi reappears as a young buck, and it deals with how the Prince completes Bambi's education. The Prince is broken-hearted with the loss of his mate, and has no idea how to raise a fawn, and doesn't really want to raise Bambi, but he does the best he can. He's helped by Bambi's eager cooperation, which is often a little too eager. As Bambi grows, he determines to try to be as brave as his father, but that is hard for him to do until the time comes when he must be - and he doesn't fail. Along the way, he opens his father's heart to love and laughter once more.

There has rarely been a sequel that has been as true to the original as this movie is. The artists made a conscious effort to create the lush, gorgeous world of the first film, and succeeded very well. The animation is equally good, and the character designs are true. Even the voices are close to the original's. Most of the favorite characters return, and there are a few new ones as well. Many of the scenes echo those of the original, as well. Watching these two films back-to-back, it's almost a seamless match.

The music in Bambi II is not memorable, but it's unobtrusive. The art is splendid. The story isn't deep, but it is an excellent bridge between the first and last parts of the original film, filling in the missing time with a realistic story that explains Bambi's development and other little details, such as his feud with Ronno. It is a worthy sequel, which is a rare thing.

Main Characters:

Bambi (Voice: Alexander Gould)
The young hero of the movie recovers from tragedy and does his best to become as great as his father. He finds that he can't always follow in his father's footsteps, but he also finds his own strength and courage.

The Great Prince of the Forest (Voice: Patrick Stewart)
The grieving Prince is not ready to be a full-time dad, but he takes on the responsibility and does the best he can. He teaches Bambi much, but he also learns much from him.

Thumper (Voice: Brendon Baerg)
Bambi's best friend is still getting into trouble, and is plagued by his persistent sisters. He shows Bambi and Flower (and a few others) an odd method for a prey animal to deal with enemies.

Flower (Voice: Nicky Jones)
Awakened from hibernation, Flower joins his friends and discovers his own strength - the strength of every skunk.

Faline (Voice: Andrea Bowen)
Sensible and sweet, Faline persists in her affection for Bambi.

Ronno (Voice: Anthony Ghannam)
Ronno is a braggart and a bully. He continually butts heads - literally and figuratively - with Bambi, especially when showing off for Faline's attention.

Friend Owl (Voice: Keith Ferguson)
Friend Owl is given the task of finding a new home for Bambi.

Thumper's sisters (Voice: Makenna Cowgill, Emma Rose Lima, Ariel Winter)
This cute little quartet adore their older brother and follow him everywhere - and are a bit smarter than he is, at times.

Other Characters:

Groundhog (Voice: Brian Pimental)
This character announces Spring by not seeing his shadow.

Porcupine (Voice: Brian Pimental)
This ornery, curmudgeonly, and dangerous creature tests Bambi's courage.

Bambi's Mother (Voice: Carolyn Hennesy)
Appearing to Bambi in a dream, his mother reassures him that she's always with him.

Mena (Voice: Cree Summer)
The doe that Friend Owl finds to adopt Bambi, Mena is wise enough to know the fawn belongs with his father.

Thumper's mother
This lady rabbit keeps her son obedient, mostly by using his father's sayings.

Favorite quotes:

The Great Prince: A prince... (fill in any one of several things here)
This is one quote that appears constantly throughout the movie. The Prince is always posing his lessons to Bambi as what a prince should or shouldn't do.

The Great Prince: A prince looks out for the herd. Does care for the young.

The Great Prince: How do you know you don't like it if you've never tried it?

The Great Prince: I think it's best to leave the past in the past.

Thumper: Well, she's not the boss of me. If I don't want to, Mama can't make me.

Faline: Who are you?

Ronno: The name's Ronno. And these are the boys, Stab and Jab. (thrusts his horns into a tree, and a load of snow falls on him) Ooof!

Faline: Well, I hope the three of you have a nice day.

Bambi: Why did you have to go?
Bambi's mother: Everything in the forest has its season. Where one thing falls, another grows. Maybe not what was there before, but something new and wonderful.

Bambi's mother: I'm always with you. Even when you can't see me, I'm here.

The Great Prince: When I tell you to run, you run! Never freeze like that. EVER!

Thumper (attempting a fierce growl): Arrrr!
Flower (whispers to Bambi): I think he's got a hairball.

Ronno (as Faline runs off): Hey! I wasn't finished talkin' about me!
(refreshing honesty....)

Ronno (to Bambi): Don't feel bad. If we didn't have cowards, we couldn't tell who the brave ones are.

The Great Prince (looking across the ravine): Did you jump?
Bambi: Yes sir.
The Great Prince: Hmm. I couldn't make a jump like that until I had antlers.

The Great Prince: Being a prince means sacrifice. He must ignore his feelings and do what is best for others.

Ronno: MOMMMMMYYYY!

Porcupine: Look who's here. I guess somebody didn't learn their lesson.
Bambi: I learned plenty!

Friend Owl: Twitterpated.

Flower: See? I told you turtles were scary.

The Great Prince: Beautiful, isn't it? This is... this is where I first met your mother.

Favorite scenes:

The return of Bambi's mother wasn't a great scene in itself, but it was immensely satisfying. When Bambi lost her in the first movie, it was so sad and so abrupt. Having her return and tell him she'd always be with him was, well, a dream scene.

Also, I loved being able to see the Great Prince being "human", with feelings, making mistakes, so much more than just the noble figurehead of the first film. My favorites of the many scenes of this type are the scenes where he's playing with Bambi and the scene where he takes Bambi to the place he first saw his mate.
