Balto

Balto is based on the true story of an extremely courageous wolf dog and how he succeeds in saving the entire town of Nome, Alaska from the grave diphtheria epidemic of 1925.

Balto is the story of a true hero and the battles he fights in order to discover his identity. Being part wolf and part dog, Balto does not know where he belongs, and so he is forced to live in the outskirts of the small town of Nome. Almost nobody in the town accepts who or what he his, and the only friends he has are a loudmouth goose named Boris who looks out for him, two hyperactive polar bear cubs named Muk and Luk, and a beautiful husky named Jenna.

Once the diphtheria epidemic hits the town of Nome, Balto must strike out on his own and travel through the freezing cold to find a lost sled dog team sent to retrieve anti-toxin and bring it back to Nome. The fate of the town rests upon the noble spirit of Balto, the wolf dog.

Character Profiles:

Balto. VA-Kevin Bacon

Balto, as you no doubt have guessed, is the major hero of the story. He is part wolf and part dog. Being so, he is subjected to a great deal of teasing by the other dogs in the town, Steele especially. Balto is a very pure-hearted and gentle creature who is merely misunderstood by the townspeople. He is a very determined and caring creature who never backs down from a challenge, even if it requires running 600 miles through the freezing coldness of Alaska to prove himself.

Jenna. VA-Bridget Fonda

Jenna seems to be the major heroine of the story. She is a very strong-minded character and she has a very big heart as well. There is no doubt that she has strong feelings for Balto, not to mention admiration for all of his efforts to save the town of Gnome. She even pitches in during the film to help Balto on his journey. Jenna is one of the few characters who understands Balto and she supports him in every way. She is also owned by Rosy.

Boris. VA-Bob Hoskins

Boris is a truly unforgettable character in this film. While he serves as the majority of the comic relief in the film, he is also determined to help Balto on his journey in any way that he can. Of course, he did need some convincing by Balto. While Boris can appear to be extremely cynical and grouchy at times, he is truly a very hilarious and memorable character and has a huge amount of faith in Balto. His Russian accent was a definite plus to the personality of his character as well.

Steele. VA-Jim Cummings

Steele is definitely the most repulsive character in the entire film, as well he should be if he's the so-called "villain." Steele gets joy out of terrorizing Balto and cracking a nasty joke about him at any opportunity. He believes Balto is crazy for believing that a musher would put him in a dog sled team, and Steele also believes that he, himself, is the only one who can save the town. Of course, Steele was probably more concerned with the way his image looked rather than being concerned with bringing medicine back to his home town to save the children. His selfishness and arrogance does eventually come back to haunt him though.

Muk and Luk. VA-Phil Collins

Muk and Luk were the two polar bear cubs that absolutely adored Boris. They called him "Uncle Boris," but treated him more like a father figure. "Adorably pathetic" are two words that could be used to sum up these two cubs and I mean that in the nicest way. Muk was the only one of the two that talked, and Luk only made sounds. Both of them were afraid of the water until they saved Balto at one point from a frozen lake. They are also very fond of Balto, almost as much as they love Boris. Both are extremely amusing characters, even though they don't have very much importance to the film.

Nikki. VA-Jack Angel
Kaltag.VA-Danny Mann
Star. VA-Robby Rist

These three characters appear to be Steele's right paw henchmen in the film and they almost always appear together in any scene. They contribute to the teasing and bullying of Balto, but it seems they do this only because they're more afraid of Steele than anything. When Steele isn't around, their true feelings for him come out. They actually despise him more than not. Towards the end of the film, the three of them come to hold the highest respect for Balto, and they cheer him on as the savior of the town. Nikki looks like a rather pudgy chow chow, Star is a smaller, mixed breed of some kind who is subjected to the constant bopping on the head, and Kaltag is easy to point out because of his one dark eye and one light eye, and because he's always bashing Star on the head! All three seem to offer more comic relief throughout the film.

Rosy. VA-Juliette Brewer

Rosy is Jenna's owner and is one of the main focuses in the film with regards to the diphtheria epidemic. While only a little girl, she has a large amount of energy and she also cares for Balto a great deal. It's unfortunate that she had to spend most of the film in bed. It would have been nice to see her character develop a little more in the movie.

Sylvie. VA-Sandra Searles Dickinson

Sylvie didn't play that big of a role in the film. She was more of a gossip character, but didn't get that much film time. She seemed to be a larger equivalent of Dixie for the most part. The funniest line she had was when she mentioned Dixie's new collar.

Dixie. VA-Sandra Searles Dickinson

Dixie was actually more interesting a character than Sylvie, not to mention much more hyper. She was absolutely obsessed with Steele up until the very end of the film. Why she was so obsessed with him up until that point is beyond me. Her voice definitely seemed to match her size and her rather annoying personality. She, too, was more of minor character, appearing in two, maybe three small scenes in the film.
