Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is an unusual Disney movie. It's an adventure story that doesn't consist of singing and dancing characters, cute animals and a heart-warming family story. It's an adventure story that involves gunfights, violence and powerful mystical forces.

Milo Thatch is a young cartographer and linguist who is certain that the lost continent of Atlantis exists and is determined to find it. The only problem is that the professors at the museum think he's a nutcase and won't fund the journey. One night Milo is invited to see the eccentric millionaire, Preston B. Whitmore, who promises to fund the trip as a tribute to his old friend, Milo's grandfather. Milo and his crew, consisting of colorful personalities, set out to find Atlantis and end up finding much more than they ever expected.

The movie is one of Disney's darker ones, which is a welcome surprise. There are many scenes that have never been seen in a Disney film before: healing crystals, lots of people dying, guns and violence. But the movie doesn't dwell on those things, the animation is top notch and the characters all have carefully detailed backgrounds which makes them individual and interesting. This one's truly an unusual Disney classic.
