Aladdin

Aladdin is a poor "street rat" living in the slums of Agrabah, when he chances to meet the beautiful, headstrong princess Jasmine. They fall in love, despite their major class difference. Meanwhile, the Sultan's grand wasir Jafar is trying to get ahold of a magical lamp (holding a Genie within) in a tiger-god's cave. He finds that the only person who can enter the cave, though, is Aladdin. Jafar has Aladdin arrested by the palace guards, and tricks the heroic young orphan into getting the lamp for him. But by a twist of fate (or, rather, a monkey's bite), Aladdin becomes the new master of the lamp and the Genie inside. The Genie and Aladdin soon become best friends, and the Genie becomes his greatest ally in the fight for Jasmine's heart. But Jafar is mad; he still wants the lamp. He'll stop at nothing - even murder - to get it back.

As written in Aladdin: The Making of an Animated Film, "The Genie cracks his knuckles; Aladdin leans down and whispers to the Magic Carpet; Jasmine sings - and we believe."

Characters:

Aladdin: (Scott Wienger) A street kid who knows he was meant for bigger things in life. You can see from the way he goes after Jasmine that he has the persistence he needs. He's a diamond in the rough who can't give her rubies or emeralds, but he has a way of presenting her with an apple he swipes that a Prince couldn't match for charm.

Jasmine: (Linda Larkin) She's the contemporary Disney heroine - independent, spunky and determined to follow her heart. Jasmine has been frustrated by her cloistered life at the palace and by her own overprotective father, the Sultan. That's why she disguises herself, runs out to the marketplace, gets in trouble with a vendor and creates the situation that Aladdin has to help her out of.

The Genie: (Robin Williams) A spirit who can transform himself into anything he thinks of as fast as he can free-associate; who loves verbal puns, jokes and jibes and sight gags, flashes of merriment - and freedom.

Jafar: (Jonathan Freedman) The evil, power-hungry wasir of the Sultan. Jafar uses smooth talk, lies, and eventually the power of a genie to get what he wants: the throne of Agrabah. His lust for power ultimately costs him his own freedom when Aladdin tricks him into wishing himself into a genie.

The Sultan: Jasmine's befuddled, toy-loving father, a benevolent monarch who just wants to see his only child happily married. But he is so guideless that unless he finds someone to advise him to beware of his adviser, he won't live to give toys to his grandchildren.

Iago: Jafar's ex-sidekick after Return of Jafar, Iago tags along with Aladdin and the gang as a good guy. No longer acting stupid in public for the "bird" act, he's vocal all the time, much to the dismay of his friends.

Abu: Aladdin's sidekick, a little capuchin monkey whose pick-pocketing techniques get him into trouble, but whose fundamentally good heart gets him out. You gotta like a guy whose best friend is a monkey.

Carpet:Carpet is the unsung hero in the Aladdin saga, saving Aladdin and the gang from imminent doom more times than any of them can remember. Still, he's just the quiet, mellow shadow that follows his pals into every adventure imaginable with (obviously) not a word.

Rajah: Pet tiger to the princess, who comes almost to her shoulders, though she treats him like an overgrown cat. Raja has a non-speaking role. A growling role.

Favorite quotes:

Jasmine: Just go...jump off a balcony!

Aladdin: She's got this hair that just, and these eyes -wow- and her smile? Ahhh!

Genie: First, this fez and vest combo-much too third century. What are we trying to say here? Beggar? No.

Jafar: No, only until she finds that...chump husband.

Favorite scenes:

Any Aladdin enthusiast will tell you that one of the best sequences in the movie is the "Whole New World" sequence. Beautifully executed with magical feel, it really brings the movie to life. The magic carpet takes Aladdin and Jasmine on a "world tour," going everywhere from Egypt to Greece, and ending in China. The whole song is just beautiful, and very touching.

The "Friend Like Me" number is also exceptional. It combines bouncy rhythm and fast paced animation for a sweeping show stopper. Not only is Robin Williams excellent in the singing aspect of this section, his funny voices and execution of the lines really make it a great comedy number.

Comments:

As well as just the one movie, the success of Aladdin encouraged Disney to release two straight to video sequals and a TV show. Observe...

The Return of Jafar

Jafar returns to try and take over Agrabah once again. More powerful than ever, Aladdin must, once again, save the day for his city. But this time, Jafar is an all-powerful genie, and since Al's Genie has been freed, all he has are, "semi-phenomenal, almost cosmic powers." Jafar's old henchman Iago has joined the forces of justice, and in the end Jafar -naturally- gets his just deserts.

New Characters

Abis Mal: A punchy, funny villain trying -unsuccessfully- to tame Jafar into following his desires.

Quotes

Genie: You'd be surprised what you can live through.

Jafar: You'd be surprised what you can live through.

Iago: You'd be surprised what you can live through.

Abis Mal: Does this mean I don't get my third wish?

Aladdin and the King of Thieves

Aladdin and Jasmine are finally going to marry, that is, until the forty thieves decide to drop by. Aladdin learns something about the king of thieves that could change his life forever, and Jasmine is determined to try and get him back.

New Characters

Casim: Aladdin's father and the King of Thieves. He's strong, determined, and just as slick as his son, although not as cute ;).

Rasoul: While he's not really a new character, this is the first time we really see into his personality. Rasoul does not like Aladdin at all, and is quite pleased at any opportunity to try and ditch him.

Quotes

Genie: The crowd is parting...it's Moses!

Genie (as Thor): I'm Thor
Genie (as reporter): You're Thor?
Genie (as Thor): Well, it hurts!

Jasmine: People like you don't come out of thin air.

Genie: I only counted 39!
Aladdin: 40.

Jasmine: That's for ruining my wedding!

Aladdin: When I get up, remind me to bow to you!

Aladdin: The TV Series

In the TV show Aladdin, the hero faces many new opponents, like Mozenrath, his new arch nemesis since Jafar was eliminated. The Genie and Jasmine are always by his side for any adventure, along with Iago, the always annoying, yet strangely endearing parrot.

Characters

Mozenrath: Aladdin's new arch enemy since Jafar's defeat, Mozenrath is also probably his only real match. He's determined to take over Agrabah and the rest of the seven deserts, and only Al -with a little help from his buddies- can stop him.

Sadira: A little orphan who masters the spells of the Witches of the sand, Sadira also had a mad crush on Aladdin.
