Behind the scenes of the hustle and bustle of every-day life in Tokyo, there exist many people who strive to become stronger by competing against each other in street fights. Air Master is the name given to one such undefeated fighter who is known for her aerial combat style. Her real name is Maki Aikawa and this anime follows her experiences and those of a few other people she has a great impact on.
Maki is an orphaned teenager who has lived on her own since her mother passed away a short time ago. The story begins when she is befriended by a few female classmates. When she's needed to save them from some bad guys, the fighting begins. Maki's desire for competition leads her to face ever stronger opponents and find out what she's truly capable of as she strives to see just what will happen in the future.
Air Master is very entertaining and simply a great fighting anime. The action scenes are intense and well animated with music that drew me in, and each fighter has a unique and interesting style. Outside of combat, it is at times inspirational, but more often hilarious. The early episodes can be a bit off-putting, as a couple of Maki's friends are annoying at best, and the art style is rather simplistic (many of the exaggerated facial expressions are flat-out ugly), but by the time Julietta Sakamoto appeared I was hooked. It would probably receive a PG-13 rating in the U.S. for violence, language, a couple sexual situations and some not particularly enticing fan service. There are many unforgettable characters in this show, and despite its flaws, Air Master is a very fun experience.

Main Characters:
Maki "Air Master" Aikawa VAs: Romi Paku and Jennifer Goodhue.
Formerly an olympic-level gymnast (despite standing over 6 feet tall), Maki has since transformed her skills and athletic ability into an awe-inspiring fighting style. She uses this out on the streets to feed her desire for competition and pressure. Her spirit is a dangerous thing to come up against, and she truly is a genius when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, but her mental capacity for other things is practically nonexistant. She's a good friend though, and is occasionally surprising with words of wisdom.
Mina Nakanotani VAs: Yukana and Nadine Rabinovitch
Mina is a very feminine rich girl whose distinguishing feature is her excessively large chest. She's friends with Yu, Michiru and Renge and takes a liking to Maki right from the start. She's mostly refined and proper, but also extremely emotional and is very protective when other people try to get close to Maki.
Yu Takigawa VAs: Mariko Suzuki and Stacey Depass.
Yu is the free spirit of the group. She's confident and fun-loving and if their little gang had a leader, Yu would be it. She loves to tease the others and isn't afraid to criticize or laugh at them. Yu and Michiru make a great duo and are seldom seen apart.
Michiru Kawamoto VAs: Masami Asano and Kim Kuhteubl
If Yu is the captain, then Michiru is the information officer. She's responsible (most of the time) and tactful and seems to keep the group headed in the right direction.
Renge Inui VAs: Tomoko Kaneda and Julie Lemieux.
Renge is a tiny child-like classmate of Yu and Michiru's. She is a champion eater with psychic powers, and a harsh, grating voice that is displeasing to the ear.
Kaori Sakiyama VAs: Mika Doi and ?
Possibly the most amazingly self-righteous and confident character ever, Kaori Sakiyama starts out as a struggling model with big dreams. Following a confrontation with and her eventual defeat by Air Master, Sakiyama vows to take her revenge and defeat Maki. Sakiyama is simply an awesome character... she works hard and never gives up trying to beat Maki, despite losing badly every time they fight. She shouts almost everything she says, never backs down from a challenge and never gives up on her dreams, it's quite fitting that she becomes a professional wrestler.
Julietta Sakamoto VAs: Kenyuu Horiuchi and ?
Julietta is a ghost writer, ladies man, amazing fighter and all-around frightening guy. He falls in love with Maki at first sight and nearly succeeds in seducing her, getting her all the way to his apartment before she realizes what's happening. While he fights, he thinks only of Maki and when he says her name, it sends chills down her spine, even across the city. He's able to suppress his pain and is relentless in both love and war.
Kinjiro Kitaeda VAs: ? and ?
Kinjiro is the champion fighter from a boys high school. He doesn't like women, but Maki surprises him and when she beats him, he too joins the list of people out to defeat her. His fighting style emphasizes his spirit to give everything he's got all at once. He trains out in the wilderness and claims to have killed a bear with his fist.
Shiro Saeki VAs: Toshio Furukawa and ?
Shiro is Maki's father and a professional fighter in his own right. He's a 3-time champion (kickboxer I think) and runs a dojo. He has since remarried following Maki's mother's death.
Miori Saeki VAs: Yukiko Hirotsu and ?
Miori is Shiro's other daughter and Maki's half-sister. She's very young but is already a decent fighter, and thinks highly of herself. She runs away from home to go and live with Maki after meeting her and eventually takes a liking to Kai.
Kai Sampagita VAs: Michie Ishizuka and ?
Kai is a professional wrestler when she's first introduced, tag teamed with the champion Mio Hayase. Her nickname is Sky Star and her aerial combat skills rival Maki's. Before becoming a pro, she was trained ever since she was a little girl by her brother Lucha master.
Lucha Master VAs: Unshou Ishizuka and ?
Lucha Master is a self-named practitioner of Mexican wrestling skills. He's the first serious street fighter to challenge Air Master in the series, and he has an interesting way with words. His speeches are often inspirational and he has a habit of firing up his opponents, which tends to lead to his own defeat.
Shinnosuke Tokita VAs: Tomokazu Seki and ?
Shinnosuke is a high school student who is trained in staff martial arts and tries to become a street fighter. After he's defeated by Maki, he develops a crush on her, but also wants to defeat her. Yu and Michiru both have a crush on him.
Tsukio Taketsugu VAs: Kihachirou Uehara and ?
Tsukio is another street fighter who becomes friends with Maki and the other girls after Renge helps him buy breakfast one morning he was broke. He's good friends with Reichi and his fighting style consists mostly of making use of his "jackhammer punch."
Reichi Mishima VAs: Daisuke Sakaguchi and ?
Reichi is another young street fighter who uses his bike in combat. He rides in a sort of extreme BMX style and uses the bike as an extension of his own body. He's a typical adolescent male and has his eyes on Mina.

Nagato VAs: Daisuke Satozaki and ?
Standing about 8 feet tall, Nagato is a giant of a man... who just happens to be in love with Kinjiro. Nicknamed the Long Fist, Nagato has been following Kinjiro for a long time, making sure that no woman would ever take his Kin-chan's heart. He's very creepy.
Tomiko Seriguchi VAs: ? and ?
This cute woman is the founder of the "Famiwrestlers" tag team. Tomiko gets Kaori and Maki involved in professional wrestling.
Mio Hayase VAs: ? and ?
A champion professional wrestler, Mio Hayase is Kai's tag team partner when they're first introduced.
Shizuna VAs: ? and ?
A very petite woman, Shizuna is a nurse whose desire is to build the perfect "Shizunaman." She builds special armor suits for fighters and is there to help out Kinjiro when he needs his broken arm healed.
Fukamichi VAs: Takehito Koyasu and ?
The organizer and fundraiser of the Fukamichi Rankings, a secret street fighting organization. He holds the 2nd Rank.
Yoshitoku Konishi VAs: Katsuyuki Konishi and ?
The 3rd place holder in the Fukamichi Rankings. Konishi believes he has attained perfection and specializes in grappling and submission techniques.
Yuki Minaguchi VAs: Mami Koyama and ?
The 4th place holder and the strongest woman in the Fukamichi Rankings. Yuki at first appears to be a very refined woman, but she harbors an intense fighting spirit inside her. Her fighting style is a combination of using her hands like knives, and tripping her opponents up when they try to move. Cold, calculating and frightening.
Kouji Okata VAs: ? and ?
Ranked 5th in the Fukamichi Rankings, Kouji is a ninja, and uses strange movement techniques to toy with his opponents' senses.
Shigeo Komada VAs: Shinichiro Miki and ?
Ranked 6th, Shigeo has trained hard and worked out to become the physical embodiment of a video game fighter.
Nobuhiko Fukamichi VAs: ? and ?
The big shot's little brother, Nobuhiko ranks 7th. He's tired of living in his brother's shadow and uses fireworks during his fights.
Keari VAs: ? and ?
Originally ranked 8th, Keari's appearance is short-lived as the first time we see him is also the last.
Shun Yashiki VAs: Kazushige Tanaka and ?
Initially ranked 9th, Yashiki is a guy that loves to talk and has an interesting personality. He specializes in using "ki" or spirit energy.
Kawahara VAs: Takeru Noshima and ?
Ranked 10th, Kawahara is a trash-talking boxer.
Sawamura VAs: Hirokazu Sonobe and ?
Sawamura's fighting style is heavily influenced by street dancing. He is 11th in the Fukamichi Rankings.
