Summary: Jet spots a set of train tracks when the crew lands on a planet trying to capture pirates. They lead him to something he'd never expect to find....
Like almost all of my fanfics, this story was written under the influence of a song. The song was Digging My Potato on the Cowboy Bebop Original Soundtrack #1, perfect for a desert scene.
"K'so" swore Spike and Faye in union. "Now we'll never catch them."
The bebop crew was in hot pursuit of a band of space pirates over a desert wasteland. The vigilantes almost caught the thieves when they abruptly disappeared over the horizon into hyperspace.
"Oh well" muttered Spike indignantly "I guess we better land here for tonight, seeing how the ship took in a lot of damage from the pirates".
As he set the Bebop down on the planet's sandy landscape, Faye began to give out orders (what else is new?)."Spike, you and Ed type up that report for the police. I'll start on fixing the ship's exterior, and Jet..."
Jet wasnt listening. He was looking out the window of the cockpit as if he were in a trance....
Faye took this as an insult. "JET!!" she shouted in his ear, causing him -and everyone else- to jump a foot in the air and snap out of his state. "Go look around for any sign of the pirates! NOW!!" Jet clasped a hand over Faye's mouth and yelled "Ok! I'll be right back! Don't shout at me!" and stomped outside the room to the rear hatch. "Geez, what a wench!" he said out loud, making sure Faye could hear him. As he walked, Jet slowly remembered why he zoned out back in the pit. //We're on Histan // he thought to himself.
When Jet finally made it outside, he looked around the dry hot land. About fifty yards away, there was an old ghost town, as dusty as the desert surrounding it. Giant cacti dotted the edge of the town, each one with mangled limbs and great sharp thorns. Vultures hovered around the deteriating buildings under a cloudless blue sky, and nearby the buildings were...train tracks..
//It must've been trashed by space pirates// Jet thought again, walking across the badlands to the old town, narrowly avoiding a tumbleweed rolling towards him. He walked straight to the tracks. The place was completley deserted unless you counted the tumbleweed. Old, broken bits of computers and tracking systems layed in the sand and around the vacant doorways of abandoned general stores. Jet stopped in front of the set of tracks. He followed them with his eyes to where they led. Straight into the desert.//Guess I'll see where they go, since there's nothing here...//Jet began to follow the train tracks outside the town. The sun was hot and merciless, but the tracks seemed to almost hypnotize him in to following them.Walking down the tracks brought back memories. Memories of his days in the ISSP, his past friends, and this town...
~*~(10 years earlier)~*~
A younger Jet Black sits in a bar of an old western-like town with a friend, laughing and talking and playing card games."I win again!" he says as his colleauge groan and throws in his chips. "Geez Black, why do you have to be so damn lucky all of the time?" he grumbles jokingly, beckoning the waitress for the check. "Hey, I can't exactly help it if I'm naturally lucky now can I?". He looks at his watch and sits up from the table."Well, we better be off.." he says, grabbing his hat and heading towards the door. "It's almost three, the trains leaving soon." Jet's friend follows him out the door. " I'm really glad they put a train in this town. It really reminds me of the old west." The other nods in agreement as they board the train. "It's a lot more peaceful on a train than in one of those stupid hoverships, thats for sure" says the tall, grey haired man beside Jet.
Jet and his partner were on vacation on Histan, a small desert on Earth famous for a vintage wild west style. His party consised of him and a man named Fad, who was very close to Jet. The two officers depart the train and walk around the station. "This was just what I needed" says Jet "A little break to store my energy. Did you know that the sniper were searching for near Pluto's killed over 6 civilians?" Fad chuckles. "You never let go, do you, black dog? You make the rest of the force look bad." Jet grins and replys "Hey, I'm not one to look the other way on crime." Fad's smile fades at this. //That makes one of us, unfortunatley.. sorry I'm a sellout, black dog, but there's nothing else the police can do.// Fad is so deep in thought he doesn't realize he's dropped his I.D. badge on the tracks.....
~*~(back to the present)~*~
Jet's forehead was brimming with sweat from the unruly heat. He thought of turning back but the tracks wouldn't let him leave... He spotted something over the edge of a mountainside. It was the train station, and that was it. Anything else around it might've been a town at somepoint, but looked more like a junkyard now. //Great// he thought //Nothing here either. Why did I even walk this far? I must be getting delusional from this heat...//
*Tink*. His foot hit something small and metal. He looked down and picked up what he thought was a chunk of computer screen, but was actually a rusty piece of metal. Jet breathed on it and shined it with his shirt. The initials ISSP were engraved on it and, to Jet's immense suprise, a name..
"Fad...."
"Ok, now I'm pissed" said Spike, pacing around the bebop's main hallway. "Where the hell is he?" Faye snorted and replied "Damned if I know, Spike. He's probably just taking his time on purpose to annoy me."
There was a scratching at the hatch door. "Ein is back" quipped Ed, somersaulting to the hatch and pushing the open button. Ein trotted in and stood in front of Ed, wide-eyed. "Is Papa Anywhere??" she asked the corgi. Ein wagged his tail excitedly and barked. Then he ran back outside, yipping and coaxing the crew to follow him. Faye looked at Spike questionably. "You don't really think...." Spike grinned. "Worth a try, Faye" and with that said he grabbed her hand and ran outside, Ed in tow.
They followed the little dog to the center of the ghost town, right to the train station. Abruptly, Ein stopped in front of the set of tracks and pointed with his paw to the center of them. "Whoa, whoa, hold it! " said Faye sternly, hands on her hips, glaring at Ein. "You're telling me we've got to walk down there??" she pointed to the long, grueling hot walkway that was the tracks.
Ein nodded. Faye moaned. "Well let's go!" exclaimed Ed, already running down the tracks, Ein by her side. Spike shrugged and ran after them.
"There's no way I'm walking down those tracks in this heat, Spike!"
she yelled. "Jet can die of heat stroke for all I care!...hn." And with that said, Faye turned on her heel and stormed out of the town and back to the air-conditioned comfort of the ship.
Suddenly, Ed spotted Jet walking back to into town and gasped "Papa!".
Suprised to hear Ed, Jet looked up from the badge he was still holding in his hand."And where did you go to? Don't tell me you followed these entire tracks!"Spike's voice called out, interrupting the thoughts rushing through Jet's mind."Alright, I won't tell you" he joked. "C'mon, let's get out of this heat."
That night, the crew had all fallen asleep except Jet. He was still looking at the badge. // To my friend..// he thought as he walked over to nightstand. He placed the badge on the nightstand inside a small wooden box. //...And my rival. Good night, Fad//.
