It has been about eight years since the wedding of Pocahontas and John Smith. They live a happy and fulfilling life right in the Powhatan village, especially after the birth of their first child, Rebecca. Rebecca was the perfect image of Pocahontas and John Smith put together. She had black hair like her mother, soft blue eyes and thin lips like her father. She was a very spunky, energetic and beautiful child as well as adventurous and mischievous… Rebecca got into a lot of trouble.

Being very much like her parents, Rebecca was always seeking something fun and exciting to do. However, being seven years old, making trouble was a requirement! And there were certainly lots of ways to make trouble in a thriving village. The warriors had just returned from another village with a load of chickens. Meanwhile, Rebecca was chasing Meeko. She loved to play with him, but it seemed she always got into trouble because of it. The men were loading the wooden crates of chickens off the canoes. Rebecca and Meeko just happened to be coming their way! Meeko jumped onto one of the crates, which spooked the chickens a bit. Unfortunately, Rebecca followed him and jumped onto the crate as well! Being caught unaware, the men lost grip of the crate and down it fell onto the ground. The crate broke and there were chickens every where! The men quickly scrambled for them, while Rebecca sat there quite startled and quite covered in feathers! “Rebeccaaaaaa!” Yelled an old woman, everyone already knew it was Rebecca who caused all the commotion, even though she was covered with feathers. As she made an attempt to stand, Rebecca slipped on a piece of wood. Luckily her father was there to catch her. John Smith lifted her up and looked at her. “And what are you doing?” John asked his daughter. “It was an accident, really!” Rebecca replied trying to explain. She turned to frown at Meeko, who was hiding innocently in a tree. “No more….” John began, but the old woman interrupted him by yelling: “You should be keepin’ an eye on your own child, she needs to learn how to control herself!” “Uh, oh”, said Nakoma, who was coming back from a walk with Pocahontas. “What is it?” Pocahontas asked. “Look over there!” Nakoma pointed to John and Rebecca. “Oh, no, not again!” Pocahontas sighed. This wasn’t the first time the old lady complained about Rebecca. “I apologize, really, but she’s only a child.” John told the old lady. “No good talking to you! Where’s Pocahontas? I want to speak to the mother!” She shouted. “I’m right here”. Pocahontas answered. “Oh! Well I was just saying that your daughter ought to control herself.” The old lady told Pocahontas. Rebecca looked at Pocahontas. Pocahontas sighed, and looked at John. He shrugged his shoulders and Pocahontas looked at the old woman. “She’s only a child.” “Ohhhh! No wonder she’s so destructive, no discipline!” With that, the old woman stomped back to her teepee.

“Rebecca, what am I going to do with you?” Pocahontas said. “I’m really sorry, it was an accident,” Rebecca replied. “Seems to me you’ve had a lot of accidents!” John said as he removed a feather from her hair. “You have to learn to behave.” John told her. “But I was playing with Meeko, and he jumped on the crate so I followed him.” Rebecca explained trying to defend herself. “Well Meeko loves to eat stale biscuits, since he likes them so much… want one?” John asked teasing Rebecca as he held one to her face. “Yuck! Dad!” Rebecca replied giggling as she pushed the biscuit away. Pocahontas smiled and said, “We understand you like to play with Meeko, but perhaps you should play away from where others are working.” Rebecca looked down. “Hey why don’t we go for a canoe ride?” John asked. “Yeah, ok!” Rebecca replied happily, she knew her parents weren’t angry with her after all.

Ten years later Rebecca had grown to adult hood, she was seventeen years old. John was even more protective of her than ever before, he forbid her to go into Jamestown without him. She felt like she was still seven years old because of this, but she understood. Pocahontas and John explained to her about the war that had almost taken place and the dangers of guns and racism. Rebecca felt it was the most ridiculous thing to hate others simply because they looked different, but she knew the world was an unfair place.

One day in the middle of June, Pocahontas and Nakoma were sitting with some friends talking. John Smith was returning with some warriors from the forest. “Hello everyone.” John said as he put a net of fish down on a rack. He kissed Pocahontas and looked around, “Where’s Rebecca?” He asked her. “Oh, she’s over near the lake, she’s going for a canoe ride.” Pocahontas replied. “Alone?” John asked. “Oh John, she’ll be just fine. She can take care of herself.” Pocahontas tried to reassure him. “It’s not like it was when you were her age. Things have changed, it’s dangerous for a seventeen year old girl to be out there alone.” Pocahontas looked at him, “I agree its not as safe, but she needs her space, she’s not a little girl any more.” Pocahontas told him. “Well I’m not going to let her go out there by herself”. John replied. “John, she’s going to be very upset with you.” Pocahontas told him. “I’m her father I know what’s best for her, she needs to be safe.” Pocahontas sighed, she knew John was very protective of Rebecca, she cared just as much but she felt that the forest was the safest place for her daughter. John felt Rebecca was safest when she was near him.

Meanwhile, Rebecca was paddling along the calm rivers peacefully. She looked around and smiled when she saw a deer running across the banks. She decided to stop and pulled the canoe up along side of the river. As she did she heard something; she turned around and realized it was someone loading a gun. She saw a young man kneeling behind some bushes. Not too far away was a deer unexpected of its fate. The young man lifted his gun ready to shoot. “NO!” Shouted Rebecca. Frightened by Rebecca’s sudden shout, the deer darted out of sight. “What? Who?” Said the boy, confused. He looked over and saw Rebecca standing near the river. He stood up with the gun in his hands. He was very handsome, with brown hair and deep green eyes. He was somewhat tall and thin, he was wearing a white shirt with a stitch on the front, brown knickers and black shoes. He seemed a bit puzzled on what to say and as usual Rebecca decided to say something first. “Just what do you think you were doing?” She demanded. “Excuse me?” He asked her, surprised of her boldness. “You were going to kill that poor, defenseless deer!” “It’s called hunting.” The boy replied. “No… it’s called murder!” Rebecca said sternly. “It’s just an animal.” “It’s a living thing.” Rebecca tried to explain. “But… I guess you wouldn’t understand.” Rebecca turned and started towards the canoe. “Wait!” He shouted coming towards her. Rebecca stopped, very surprised, she never thought he would say “wait”. “Look, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you or anyone else. My name’s Matthew.” He smiled. Rebecca looked at him thinking maybe he wasn’t so bad after all. “I’m….” She started to say but someone yelled, “Rebecca!” It was John Smith and he was coming right towards them.

Rebecca was very surprised to see her father yelling for her, but more than anything she was embarrassed. Matthew looked at John and John looked at him. John didn’t seem too happy. “What are you doing Rebecca?” John demanded to know. “What am I doing? What are you doing!” Rebecca stared at him very angrily. “You followed me…didn’t you?” John looked at her not knowing what to say. “I can’t believe you!” Rebecca shouted at him. With that Rebecca stomped off and paddled away in the canoe. “Rebecca!” John called but Rebecca ignored him and kept going. John turned to Matthew and saw his gun. “You are to stay away from her!” John told Matthew harshly. Poor Matthew didn’t know what to do. He stood there and watched Rebecca disappear from sight.

When Rebecca returned to the village, she rushed to find her mother. Pocahontas was sitting with some friends near the entrance. “Mom!” Rebecca shouted. Pocahontas turned and saw Rebecca looking very much upset. “Excuse me.” Pocahontas told the others. She walked over to Rebecca and asked what was wrong. “Dad! That’s what’s wrong!” Rebecca replied angrily. Pocahontas frowned interested but confused on what could have happened. “You wouldn’t believe what he did.” Rebecca said. “I went for a canoe ride and I met someone named Matthew in the forest. But who comes calling my name but dad!” “Your father isn’t that embarrassing, is he?” Pocahontas asked her. “He followed me!” Rebecca replied. “What?” Pocahontas asked, although she wasn’t very surprised. “He doesn’t trust me that’s what it is.” Rebecca said sadly. “Oh no, Rebecca don’t think that, he only cares for your safety.” Rebecca looked away and saw her father coming. She ran down to the lake and sat there not wanting to face him. John walked up to Pocahontas and she told him that Rebecca was very angry with him. “I know.” John sighed. “You’d better talk to her.” Pocahontas told him. John nodded and walked down to the lake. Rebecca was well aware her father was behind her but she said nothing. “Rebecca I’m very sorry about what I did, but I did it because I care about you.” Still Rebecca said nothing. “I only followed you for your own good, because I love you.” “Is that how you show you love me, by yelling your head off at me in front of a total stranger?” John walked over to her and sat beside her. “It’s just that I’m worried for you.” John explained. “Why?” Rebecca asked, upset. “If only you could see what your mother went through, I just don’t want you to have to go through what she did.” John said looking away. Rebecca looked at her father and understood. “I’m your father and I just don’t like the idea of you out there alone with a stranger.” John said. “Like how grandfather felt?” Rebecca asked.  “What?” John asked, surprised Rebecca had mentioned Powhatan, he had past away when she was only four years old. “You’re right, your grandfather didn’t like it at all that your mother was with me.” “Well you’re a wonderful person and both of you ended up getting married,” said Rebecca. “But this is different.” John tried to tell his daughter. “No it’s not different at all dad, maybe if I got to know him I could make a friend, like mom did. Seems to me that it turned out pretty great for her.” John looked at Rebecca and began to say, “Yes, but….” Rebecca looked away knowing her father was determined to show her that this was wrong. But John knew that his daughter was very right. “You’re right.” Rebecca looked up and smiled and hugged her father. “I love you dad.” John smiled and was relieved everything had turned out fine. Pocahontas came over and sat next to John. “What did you say to her?” Pocahontas asked him. “I said she was right.” John answered. “That’s it?” Pocahontas asked, confused. “Well, she referred to us, when we met. She told me that if she got to know him she could be friends with him.” “Well she is right.” Pocahontas told him. John looked at her and they kissed.

Early the next morning, Rebecca got up and left the village for the forest. She went to see Grandmother Willow and told her about Matthew. “Grandmother Willow?” Rebecca called for her. “Rebecca, my child! How are you this morning? You’re up very early.” “Yes, it’s just that I’m so happy. I met this young man named Matthew in the forest yesterday. “Oh?” Grandmother Willow asked with a smile. “Do you like him?” “I’ve barely gotten to know him, but he is kind of cute!” Rebecca said shyly. “He certainly is!” Grandmother Willow agreed. “Is that him?” Rebecca turned around and saw Matthew walking through some bushes. “It’s him!” She exclaimed. Rebecca stood up and looked at Grandmother Willow. “Go ahead, I’m not going any where!” Rebecca nodded and said goodbye. “Go get him!” Grandmother Willow told her. “GRANDMOTHER WILLOW!” Rebecca said astonished. “Rebecca?” Matthew had heard her. “Matthew…hi!” Rebecca spun around to him. “Who are you talking to?” Matthew asked. “Uh… no one!” Rebecca replied nervously. “Look, I wanted to apologize for yesterday.” Rebecca told him. “What do you mean?” Matthew asked her. “My dad was yelling his head off.” Rebecca said. “Oh, it’s no big deal.” Matthew said. “Don’t worry I talked to him. He understands we need to get to know each other.” Matthew smiled at Rebecca and she smiled at him but in that moment who else fell out of some bushes, but John. Rebecca couldn’t believe it, she felt like she was going to die. But more than anything else Rebecca was hurt that her father had lied to her. Meanwhile Matthew stood there in astonishment; this was one protective father. “I don’t believe you, you lied to me!” Rebecca told her father. “What’s going on?” Someone asked. It was Pocahontas who heard Rebecca. Pocahontas looked at John getting to his feet. “What are you doing?” She asked him. “That’s what I would like to know.” Rebecca said angrily. Very unexpectedly, Matthew spoke up; “You’re Pocahontas!” He said looking at her in amazement. Pocahontas looked at him, “Yes, I am.” She smiled, he reminded her of someone, he had the greenest eyes. They shook hands and Matthew looked at John Smith and realized who he was as well. “You must be John Smith! You’re the greatest hero ever!” Matthew said in admiration. John looked very proud of himself to hear such a compliment. Matthew looked as if he were in presence of gods. “But then…. He looked at Rebecca. “You’re their daughter! Oh gosh, I’m really sorry, should I leave now?” Rebecca stared at Matthew, she couldn’t believe how he was acting. “What are you talking about? Don’t be afraid of him!” Rebecca said. “But John Smith is your father!” Matthew replied. “John Smith may be a father but he’s not a monster, he has no problem with Rebecca making friends. Right John?” Pocahontas asked. “Of course, besides you seem like a nice young man. What’s your name son?” John asked him. “My name is Matthew, Matthew Rolfe.” John and Pocahontas stared at him. “Rolfe!” They both said. “Are you, by any chance, related to John Rolfe?” Pocahontas asked. “Yes, he was my father.”

Pocahontas and John could do nothing except stare at Matthew. “What? What’s wrong?” Matthew asked confused. Rebecca looked confused as well, she had never heard her parents mention someone named John Rolfe. “Well your father is a friend of ours.” John explained. Pocahontas felt her breath escape her, “He has a son.” She just couldn’t believe it. “How is he doing, is he alright?” Pocahontas asked anxiously. “You mean, you don’t know?” Matthew asked her sadly. “Know what?” John asked him, puzzled. “I can’t believe I have to tell you this. My father, well, he was killed two years ago.” “What? Killed? ” Pocahontas asked as her voice started to weaken. “Oh…no.” John said sadly. “They never caught who did it.” Matthew said unhappily. “Someone killed him?!” Pocahontas asked appalled. Everyone could see the horror in Pocahontas’ eyes, that’s when she began to cry. “We should go back to the village.” John looked at Rebecca. Rebecca looked at Matthew. “I should go back to Jamestown.” He told her quietly. “Good bye.” Rebecca whispered. She felt so confused as well as upset for her mother; she had never seen Pocahontas cry so hard.

John sat with Pocahontas in their teepee for a very long time. Rebecca told Nakoma, and Nakoma was shocked. “He’s really dead?” Nakoma asked. “Yes, but my parents never told me about him, who was John Rolfe?” Asked Rebecca. Nakoma sighed and said, “I think it is your mothers place to tell you.”  It was some time before John emerged and motioned for Rebecca to come over. Rebecca stood up and walked over to her father. As she entered the teepee she saw her mother sitting on the ground. Pocahontas’ eyes were weak and agitated from tears. “Mom, are you alright?” Rebecca asked, holding Pocahontas’ hand. Pocahontas managed a smile and touched her daughter’s face. “You must be so confused.” Said Pocahontas. John sat beside Pocahontas, ready to help explain the rest of their past to Rebecca. “John Rolfe was an English diplomat, whom I had met when I journeyed to England. I was told that you’re father was dead and I was distraut, I didn’t know what to do or where to turn to, I was lost. But I knew I had to be strong for the village.” Pocahontas went on to tell Rebecca she met her father there and found he was, in fact, alive. Pocahontas also told Rebecca about Ratcliffe and how together she, John Rolfe and John Smith stopped him. “I fell in love with John Rolfe and on the way home we were engaged to be married. Rebecca couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “You were actually engaged to him?”  Pocahontas nodded. “Wow.” Rebecca said bewildered. The thought of her mom actually being engaged to someone else had never entered her mind.

The next day, Pocahontas was doing much better; yet she couldn’t believe that John Rolfe was really gone. Rebecca wanted to do something to help her mother, so she offered to take care of Pocahontas’ responsibilities. But Pocahontas told Rebecca she needed to keep busy, that it would help take her mind off everything. Rebecca realized that it would be good for her mother, but she still wanted to help her heal. Rebecca didn’t feel right in leaving the village with her mother all upset, so she stayed. John was a bit surprised to see Rebecca still in the village. She would usually be out in the forest all day. “Are you ok?” John asked her. “Oh, I’m alright dad, but I’m worried about mom.” John sighed, “Don’t worry, your mom will be just fine, it will take time for her to get better, but she’ll be ok.” “I tried to help her with things, but she told me she needs to keep busy.” “It’s best that she does, so she doesn’t think about it too much.” John said. John sighed and told Rebecca that, even though he didn’t like it, it would be good for her to get out. “But…mom.” Rebecca replied. “Don’t worry, your mom will be just fine, I’ll be here with her. Go ahead, see if Matthew’s out there.” Rebecca finally agreed, but John made sure to tell her to come home before dark and no later.

“They were engaged?!” Matthew asked shocked. “Yes, I couldn’t believe it either.” “Why didn’t he tell me? Did he ever tell my mother?” Matthew asked himself. Rebecca looked at him, “Well I’m sure he told your mother, but like my parents, I guess he didn’t feel you needed to know.” Rebecca tried to explain. Matthew didn’t know what to think. “Maybe I shouldn’t have told you this.” Rebecca said. “ No, I should know. I mean, it was only engagement, it’s not like they were married.” “You’re right, it could have been worse.” Rebecca agreed. “Well, now what?” Matthew asked. “I guess we have to move on.” Answered Rebecca.

Rebecca invited Matthew to the village, and he was amazed by how beautiful everything was. John saw them and greeted Matthew. “Is Pocahontas alright?” Matthew asked him. “She’s doing a lot better, and I’m sure she’ll feel a lot better when she sees you.” But John felt very awkward, he thought Matthew didn’t know about his father being engaged to Pocahontas. John took Matthew and Rebecca to see Pocahontas. When they got there she was very surprised to see Matthew. When she saw him she had very mixed emotions. Matthew made her happy and sad at the same time, he reminded her of his father so much but he also reminded her that he was gone. Matthew smiled as he greeted Pocahontas, “I’m really sorry about all this.” Matthew told her. “Don’t be sorry, none of this is your fault. I just don’t understand why I wasn’t told.” Said Pocahontas. There were hundreds of questions that lingered in Pocahontas’ mind, like who could have possibly wanted to kill John Rolfe? Their conversation had its happy parts, however there were many things to be explained. Pocahontas knew she had to tell Matthew about her engagement to his father. However, Pocahontas didn’t know Rebecca had told him. “Matthew I have to tell you something that I think shouldn’t be kept from you.” Pocahontas told him. Matthew had a feeling she was going to tell him about the engagement. “I told him, mom.” Rebecca said, before her mother could say anything. “You told him?” Pocahontas asked surprised. “Yes, I thought that I should.” Rebecca said. Pocahontas felt that she should have the responsibility, however, she was a little relieved she didn’t have to tell him. Pocahontas looked at Matthew, “Well, are you ok?” Pocahontas asked him. “Oh, sure I’m alright, it’s just very surprising.” Matthew answered. “Well, it’s getting late.” John said trying to ease things up a bit. “Yes, well I should get back.” Said Matthew, “Why don’t you stay?” Pocahontas asked him. “Yes, why not? We’d love to have you.” John agreed. “Well I don’t know.” Matthew answered. “Please, it would be an honor to have you.” Pocahontas said smiling. “Well, I’d have to check out of the Inn.” Matthew said. “Oh sure, I’ll go with you.” John offered. Pocahontas smiled as Matthew went with John to Jamestown.  “He’s been through so much.” Said Pocahontas.

As John and Matthew walked through the forest, they stayed very quiet, “So, Matthew what made you come to Jamestown?” John asked, trying to break the ice. “Well I haven’t told anyone, but my mom passed away two months ago.” John didn’t know what to say, poor Matthew had it difficult. “I just had to get away, there were too many memories. They’re not bad ones, but it’s difficult when the people you’ve made them with are gone.” Matthew explained. “My parents died when I was young too. It’s very difficult to go out there on your own, but you make it and you know everything will turn out just fine.” John tried to reassure Matthew. “You know If you need anything you can ask us.” John told Matthew. Matthew smiled, “Thanks, that really means a lot to me.” he replied.

Days had soon turned into weeks and Matthew was now staying at the village. He and Rebecca had become great friends and she helped him a great deal in healing from past wounds. Matthew had felt he belonged with them and he was finally happy. “What is he doing?’ Matthew asked, chuckling. Meeko was on top of his head! “Searching you for food, what else?!” Rebecca replied giggling. Percy sat there rolling his eyes while Flit shook his head. Everyone knew all Meeko thought about was food. “Look at them John, they’re so happy. I’m so glad he’s staying with us and that we could help him.” Pocahontas was telling John as she looked at Matthew and Rebecca. “The kid’s been through a lot, there’s no doubt about that.” John replied. Rebecca laughed as Meeko pouted, apparently he found Matthew had nothing for him to eat. “Sorry Meeko, I don’t have anything for you.” Matthew told him. Rebecca looked over and saw a canoe sitting on the bank. “Why don’t we go for a canoe ride?” she suggested. “Sure that’s sounds like a great idea.” Matthew agreed. “Mom! Matthew and I are going for a canoe ride. We’ll be back before dark!” Rebecca shouted to Pocahontas. “Alright! Be careful!” Pocahontas answered. “Pocahontas, we can’t just let them go out there by themselves!” John told her. John began to walk over to them but Pocahontas stopped him. “John, let them have some fun, they’re young. Let them live a little.” Pocahontas said to him. “I want to let them live a lot.” John replied. “It’s not safe.” He continued. “They’ll be just fine.” Pocahontas assured him. John relented and watched as Rebecca and Matthew paddled away from sight.

“Everything is so beautiful here, I’m really glad I came.” Matthew said to Rebecca. Rebecca smiled, “I love it here too.” Agreed Rebecca. “So, do you have any favorite places?” Matthew asked curiously. “I sure do!” Rebecca answered. When they came upon a giant Willow tree Matthew was amazed. “Oh, wow! It’s huge! It’s as big as a building!” He exclaimed. “It’s a lot more than that. I want you to meet someone, over here.” Rebecca said. “Someone?” Matthew asked puzzled (who could possibly be living here?) Rebecca led Matthew up onto the tree stump and Matthew looked around. “So who did you want me to meet?” Matthew asked her. “See for your self.” Rebecca answered. Grandmother Willow showed herself and Matthew almost fell over. “What the?!” He yelled. “Hello, don’t be frightened.” Grandmother Willow said gently. “How?!” Matthew asked bewildered. He just couldn’t understand what he was seeing. “This is Grandmother Willow.” Rebecca introduced her. “She’s an enchanted tree.” “She’s actually real?!” Matthew asked in amazement. “This must be Matthew, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Grandmother said, kindly. “Uh… it’s a pleasure to meet you too.” Matthew said trying to catch his breath. “ Just like I said about your father, he has a good soul, and he’s handsome too!”  Grandmother Willow said to Rebecca. Rebecca giggled as she looked at a blushing Matthew. “Wow a tree that talks and compliments!” Matthew said. Rebecca smiled and they talked forever. Darkness began to fall and they said goodbye to Grandmother Willow. “This place is truly is amazing, it’s full of wonderful surprises. Coming here has been my most remarkable experience… except for meeting you Rebecca.” Matthew said as he faced her. Rebecca didn’t know what to say but she could feel her face getting red. As they were about to kiss, they were interrupted when they heard a noise. “What was that?” Matthew asked quietly. “Well it had better not be my father or I’ll never forgive him.” Rebecca said annoyed. “Let’s hurry and get back.” Matthew told her. They walked quickly in fear that it may not be John Smith after all.

“What do you think it is?” Matthew asked, now a bit scared. “It’s probably just an animal.” Rebecca replied. As they began to walk even quicker they bumped into someone and almost died of fright. “AHHHHH!” Both Matthew and Rebecca yelled. They were shocked to see John standing in front of them. “Whoa! It’s ok, it’s only me!” John said trying to calm them down. “Dad!” Rebecca said as she hugged him, “Thank goodness it’s you.” Rebecca said very relieved. “Wow, what a greeting! I expected you to be angry with me.” John told her, baffled. “Was that you back there? Matthew asked. “No, I was never behind you, I just left the village. Why? Was someone out there?” “Well….” Matthew began but Rebecca stopped him. “No! It was just an animal.” “You’re sure?” John asked concerned. “I’m certain.” Rebecca answered. Matthew looked at her. “Well let’s head back, it’s getting late.” John told them.

When they were back at the village Matthew asked Rebecca why she had lied to John. “I didn’t lie, it probably was an animal.” Rebecca replied. “Yes, probably, but we’re not certain it was. It sure didn’t sound like an animal to me.” Matthew insisted. “Matthew if we told my over protective father, that there was something out there and we didn’t know what it was, he would never let us into the forest again.” “Maybe, but still….” Matthew persisted. “We were in the forest, it was probably a raccoon or an owl, it was nearly dark.” Rebecca explained. “Maybe you’re right.” Matthew finally agreed. “Come on you two, it’s time to eat!” John called to them. Matthew and Rebecca joined the feast and tried to forget about what had happened.

That night Rebecca had a dream about the noise in the forest. She kept hearing it and as she came closer it grew louder. She came to a cliff and saw a shadowy figure standing over her father. She felt he was in extreme danger and ran to stop the figure. But strangely, she felt herself falling from the cliff. That’s when Rebecca woke up in a sweat, her dream had felt so real. It was very early in the morning and she decided she had to get up. Rebecca wanted to understand why she had such a scary dream. She thought of going to her parents, but she didn’t want to frighten them. Her village, as well as many other nations, took dreams very seriously, every dream you had meant something. Rebecca decided to talk to Grandmother Willow who, she knew, could help her greatly.

“That’s quite a frightening dream.” Grandmother Willow said to Rebecca. “What do you think it means?” Rebecca asked worried. Grandmother Willow sighed; she didn’t want to tell Rebecca it might mean something very serious. “I didn’t want to tell you this, so you must promise to go straight home afterwards and tell your parents.” “What is it?” Rebecca asked a bit anxious. “Very late last night I heard a noise, of course I thought it was an animal. But that’s when I saw someone, I had not expected it to be a person and then I thought it was your father. But it wasn’t, someone was out here and I don’t know who or why.” Grandmother Willow told Rebecca. “I don’t mean to frighten you but I saw smoke, there was someone burning a fire near the end of the forest. You must go and tell your parents so they can find out who this is.” “The noise.” Rebecca muttered. “What dear?” Grandmother Willow asked, hoping she hadn’t upset her. “I have to tell my parents.” Rebecca answered. “Yes, please hurry. Be careful!” Grandmother Willow told her. Rebecca ran from the glade and smelt something, it was smoke and it wasn’t from her village. Rebecca knew she had to get a better view and climbed a tree to see. Rebecca looked all around and just as Grandmother Willow had said, it was coming from the end of the forest.

Rebecca stared at it for a moment, who could possibly be out there? No one from the village would just leave and make camp in the forest. Rebecca looked in the direction of her home, the village would someday be hers to protect and manage. She had to find out what was going on, for the safety of her people. Rebecca knew if she told her father he would forbid her from ever going into the forest. She had decided that she was going on her own to find out who was out there.

“John have you seen Rebecca around anywhere?” Matthew asked him. John was helping the men build a new hut for a family. “No, she must be around here somewhere. I thought she’d be with you.” “Well I have looked everywhere and I don’t think she’s here.” Matthew looked at how concerned John had become, he wasn’t sure he should have told him. John might have a fit and forbid Rebecca from leaving the village on her own. As John was about to say something Pocahontas came running up to them, “I think there’s someone out in the forest I can see smoke. I think it’s coming from a camp fire.” Pocahontas told him worried. “Who could possibly be out there?” John asked. “ I think we should find out.” Pocahontas said. “Let’s hurry, Rebecca’s out there.” John told her. “What?!” Pocahontas said nervously. “I’m coming with you.” Matthew told them. “No, you must stay here, we’re not sure who’s out there.” Pocahontas told him. “Pocahontas is right you have to stay here where it’s safe.” John told him. John and Pocahontas asked Nakoma to be in charge while they left. Matthew knew he couldn’t just stay here when he knew Rebecca was out there with strangers.

It took Rebecca some time to reach the end of the forest. When she drew nearer to the smoke she could hear several voices. As she peered through some bushes she saw some unpleasantly looking men. They were all sitting on the ground and it was obvious they had made camp and the fire was still going. Their clothes were dirty and ripped but some had patches. Some of the men had not shaven in a long time and either had stubbles on their faces or beards. Some men didn’t have shoes and others didn’t have shirts. All in all they looked like pirates and that’s exactly what they were. Rebecca looked on in astonishment, why were they here? If they were pirates, then they might be looking for gold. But there was no gold in Virginia, everyone knew that, except those who were greedy and foolish. As Rebecca looked on she heard a man yelling. Suddenly he came bursting out of the largest tent and started screaming at the men. “What do you think you’re doing, you idiots! Do you want the savages to find us?!” Rebecca looked on in fear; he was obviously a horrid man. “Oh calm down, my men have to eat to keep up their strength!” Spoke up one of the men, who seemed to be the captain. In a rage the horrid man kicked the pot of food from the fire and shouted for someone to put it out. Immediately a man rushed for water and put out the fire. “Now listen up you morons!” Said the terrible man. “If those barbarians see the smoke they are to sure to find us and we simply cannot have that. You know the plan, it will be ruined if they know we’re here, we’re out numbered.” He told them. Rebecca just couldn’t believe what she was hearing, what were they planning to do? “It’s all well and good that you will get what you want, but what about our gold?” The captain asked. “You will get want you want if I get what I want. Just remember that.” The man said coldly. What did he want? It didn’t seem that he was after gold as well, Rebecca thought. “No more fire! If you want to feed your faces, eat it raw. And be ready for tonight.” He demanded them. With that the man returned to his tent. “What a monster!” One man said quietly. “He’s worse than that, he’s insane! It’s all ‘cause of what happened.” Another pirate said. “You’d think he’d want the gold.” Said another man. “Well he has gone insane!” Someone else replied. I have to get out of here and tell mom and dad, Rebecca thought to herself. As she started to stand she felt something hit her back. “And just what do you think you’re doin’?” A gruff voice asked her. Rebecca realized that it was the sharp end of a sword being held to her back.

Rebecca’s heart was pounding and she didn’t dare to turn around. “Lookie what I found lurkin’ around our camp boys!” The man said in sort of a joking matter. “Well, well look at this!” Said a pirate. “Just what do you think you were doin’ spyin’ on us?” He said. “Don’t even bother, she can’t understand a word you’re sayin’, she’s a savage.” Said the man behind her. “I am not a savage and neither are my people!” Rebecca shouted in anger. But afterwards she realized that she should have stayed quiet. “Well don’t that beat all? She actually speaks English!” Said the man. “What’s going on out here?!” The horrid man shouted as he emerged from his tent. Rebecca completely froze with fear. “We got ourselves a visitor!” One of the pirates answered. “Oh really?” The horrid man asked sounding amused. As the men parted for him to see, Rebecca tried to show she wasn’t afraid. “A savage! I knew they would find us!” He yelled. “But sir, it’s only one.” Someone said. “ONLY ONE?! ONLY ONE?!” He screamed at him. “They’re like insects! When there’s one there’s always more!” Rebecca looked at him in disgust. “Get rid of her!” He demanded. At that moment Rebecca had never been more scared in her life. “NO!” A strong voice came over everyone. Rebecca looked and saw a man emerge from a tent. He wasn’t a pirate he was Native American. Rebecca looked at him in relief, he must be here to save her! But nobody attacked him or said anything. “That is her, she is the daughter of John Smith.” He told them. Rebecca looked on in confusement and then realized that these men were obviously looking for her. The horrid man spun around to glare at Rebecca and said: “So, you are the brood of John Smith… my worst enemy?” Rebecca looked at him in horror; she could sense this man wanted to hurt her father. “Allow me to introduce myself, I am John Ratcliffe.”

“Your father as forever ruined me and I will be avenged! And so I will ruin him and take from him, his most precious treasure as he did from me!” Ratcliffe stared at Rebecca. “This does change everything! Never had I imagined it would be this easy!” He sneered. Rebecca felt as if her heart was about to jump out of her chest. “Tie her up, I want at least five men surrounding the tent!” The pirates did as Ratcliffe ordered and tied Rebecca up in the tent. Rebecca didn’t know what she was going to do; never did she think it would end up like this.

“I’m sure she’s fine.” Nakoma told Matthew who was worried about Rebecca. “But she’s out there by herself with strangers.” Matthew said. “Pocahontas and John will find out what’s going on and they will find Rebecca as well.” Nakoma said assured. Though she couldn’t help feeling worried too. “Besides, it may be someone out camping or fishing, someone from Jamestown.” Nakoma suggested. Matthew looked at her; he couldn’t stop thinking about the noise he had heard. He had a strange feeling that perhaps the smoke was related with the noise. Maybe someone was following them last night and now they were at the end of the forest. However, Matthew didn’t know it but he was right. “Nakoma, Rebecca and I were out in the forest last night but we didn’t tell anyone we heard something. At first we though it was just an animal but it sounded like footsteps. Luckily John was there but I think someone was following us.” Matthew said, feeling guilty for not telling someone. “Following you?! Why didn’t you say something!” Nakoma asked frightened. “Rebecca was worried that John wouldn’t let her go into the forest again. I know we should have told someone, I feel so guilty. I have to go out there and find her!” Matthew said as he started to stand. “No! I can’t have you both out there by yourselves.” Nakoma stopped him. “But this is all my fault, I have to find Rebecca I have to!” Matthew told her. “Matthew you can’t, you must stay here, I should get the warriors ready.” Nakoma said nervously. Matthew watched her leave, Nakoma trusted him to listen but he knew he couldn’t stay and so he started off. All he could think about was Rebecca.

Meanwhile John and Pocahontas’ first priority was to find Rebecca. And so they went to see Grandmother Willow in case she had seen her. When Pocahontas asked her about Rebecca’s whereabouts, Grandmother Willow replied nervously, “You mean she never went back?!” “You’ve seen her today?” John asked eagerly. “I should have never told her!” Grandmother Willow said regretfully. “Tell her what?” Pocahontas asked. Grandmother Willow explained to them about Rebecca’s dream and that she had seen someone in the forest last night. “That’s when I told her to go straight home and tell you.” “I know where she is.” John said. “At the end of the forest.” Pocahontas said. John nodded; “She must have went after you told her about the smoke.” “We have to hurry!” Said Pocahontas. Finding the campsite would be difficult since the smoke was gone but Pocahontas had something that could help them. “How are we going to find her now?” John asked. “With this!” Pocahontas replied, holding up John’s compass. “My compass!” John said smiling. With the compass directing them, John and Pocahontas were on their way to finding Rebecca, but they would never have guessed whom else they would find.

Rebecca didn’t know what was going to happen, but whatever it was it wasn’t going to be good. She could barley move; the pirates banded both her hands and her feet, so there was no possible escape. Why did I ever come here, why didn’t I just go home as Grandmother Willow had told me to do? Rebecca asked herself regretfully. She could not think of anything else except how much danger she had put everyone in, when she only had intentions of protecting them. “This is all my fault.” Rebecca said sadly as she hung her head. Just then she saw something drop on the ground in front of her. It was a piece of a biscuit. “Meeko?” Rebecca asked hopefully. When she looked up she saw him there sitting on one of the support poles. “Meeko!” Rebecca said happily. Meeko immediately jumped down and started to chew the ropes around her hands. “That’s it! Hurry Meeko!” Rebecca told him as she felt the ropes loosening. Finally Rebecca was free! She untied her feet and hugged Meeko who jumped into her arms. “Thank goodness you found me!” She said relieved. But now Rebecca had to try and escape. She peeked out of the tent only to see a man standing in front of her. It was no use, there were pirates surrounding the entire tent. “Wait…I have an idea.” She said looking at Meeko. The next thing you knew the pirates were running around after Meeko, who was stealing their food! “Get the filthy scoundrel, get him!” A pirate yelled. Look who’s talking! Rebecca thought. During all the commotion Rebecca sneaked out from the tent and slowly started to walk away. But it was short-lived when Rebecca gasped, she felt a strong and painful grip on her arm; it was Ratcliffe who had grabbed her. “Where do you think you’re going? We need you!” He said angrily. He turned to the men and Rebecca saw one of them had caught Meeko. “Meeko!” Rebecca yelled. “Let him go!” She demanded. Meeko struggled for his freedom and bit the man’s hand. “OWWWWWW!” He screamed. Meeko made no hesitations and ran away as fast as he could. “Get help!” Rebecca yelled to him. “You’re askin’ an animal to get help?” A man asked and then everyone started laughing except, of course, the man who had been bitten. “SHUTUP!” Ratcliffe shouted at them. “That’s exactly what we want.” He said looking at Rebecca evilly.

At the same time, Matthew was trying to find Rebecca, but where was he to go? When he looked at the sky he saw that the smoke was gone. “Now what am I going to do?” He asked himself. Matthew knew he couldn’t just stand there but if he just kept wandering he would get lost. Suddenly, Matthew heard a rustling sound in the bushes he instantly grabbed a long heavy tree branch and held it towards the bush ready to defend himself. But Meeko popped out. “Meeko?!” Matthew stared at him, very surprised. Meeko ran to his leg and started pulling him in the direction of the campsite. “What’s wrong? What are you doing?” Matthew asked confused. Meeko kept pointing, trying to get Matthew to follow him and then ran off. “Meeko!” Matthew yelled and started after him. Matthew stopped after a while when he lost sight of him. “Meeko, where are you?” He asked. Matthew looked around and suddenly bumped into John Smith. “Matthew!” He said shocked. “John!” He yelled too. “What are you doing out here?! I specifically told you to stay in the village!” John said to him. “I just can’t sit there and do nothing! I have to help!” Pocahontas came over with Meeko on her shoulder. “Matthew! What are you doing here?!” “You have to go back.” John demanded. Meeko jumped off Pocahontas’ shoulder and ran to the bushes were not to far away was the campsite. “I can’t, I’m worried about Rebecca!” Matthew insisted. “You have to go back, no questions asked….” John continued to argue with him. Pocahontas looked over where Meeko was trying to get their attention. She walked over to him and looked over the bushes and saw the campsite. “John!” Pocahontas shouted to him. John came over and Matthew followed. “Look!” She said. John looked on in shock, he didn’t think that it would be a ship full of people, never mind pirates. “Who are they?” Matthew asked. “Pirates.” John answered. “Pirates? Why would they come here?” Pocahontas asked puzzled. “To do what pirates do: steal.” John answered. “Steal what? They can’t just waltz into Jamestown and steal things.” Said Matthew. “No… they’re not going to steal from Jamestown, they’re looking for gold.” John said. “But everyone knows that this land holds no gold.” Pocahontas replied. “These are Pirates, they don’t care what anyone says, if they hear about gold they’ll go after it. They probably think it’s a rumor or something, that we’re trying to protect it.” John explained. “Either that or they’re just plain stupid.” Matthew said. “Yeah, that too.” John agreed. “Do you think Rebecca could be here?” Pocahontas asked him. “Well… let’s find out.” John answered.

“I’m very sure you are in much disarray right now. Well, let me begin by explaining how your father ruined my life! I used to be a man of high status, a governor and I was like this (crossing his fingers) with the King of England. But guess what? Your father took it all from me! He absolutely destroyed everything I had.” Ratcliffe said in a rage. “No… you did that to yourself!” Rebecca yelled at him, trying to defend her father. “Really? I wasn’t the fool that stepped in front of a bullet, to save the life of a savage!” Ratcliffe snarled. “My grandfather wasn’t a savage you’re the savage!” Rebecca yelled at him. Rebecca had never been so angry in her life, but she realized, perhaps that is what he wanted. “I’m not going to kill John Smith, that would be all too easy for him. He will feel a pain in which parents pray they will not encounter: outliving their children.” Ratcliffe said evilly. Rebecca eyes widened and she looked at him in terror.

Meeko, of course, knew Rebecca was indeed captured and not just by pirates but by Ratcliffe. Meeko ran away to the tent in which Rebecca was tied up. “Meeko!” Pocahontas whispered. They were closer to the campsite and they had to be quiet. Pocahontas chased after Meeko in fear for his safety. When she saw him on top of the tent she was scared that the pirates guarding it might see him. “Meeko!” Pocahontas whispered. Meeko motioned and tried to tell Pocahontas that Rebecca was in the tent. “What?” Pocahontas looked at him. Meeko jumped down on one of the pirate’s head and blew raspberries at him. “It’s that filthy creature again!” He yelled. “Get him!” With that all the pirates ran after Meeko. Pocahontas watched Meeko run off. She knew that he could easily outwit those pirates. She peeked under the tent and there was Rebecca. “Oh! Rebecca!” Pocahontas exclaimed. She was so relieved to see her daughter. “Mom!” Rebecca said almost in tears. “Thank goodness you’re ok!” Pocahontas hugged her daughter tightly and then began to untie her. “We have to hurry, we have to get out of here!” Rebecca told her. A dark shadow fell on them and Rebecca shouted: “Mom look out! Behind you!” Pocahontas spun around and there was Ratcliffe. “YOU!” He yelled. Pocahontas looked at him in shock. She immediately sheltered Rebecca from him. Pocahontas didn’t know what to do or say all she knew was that she had to protect Rebecca.

“Where’s Pocahontas?” John asked nervously. Matthew looked in back of him; “She was right behind me!” Matthew said in a panic. “Stay down, I’m going to find her.” Matthew did as John said and waited in hope that she was all right. John looked everywhere and feared that Pocahontas may have been caught. “Pocahontas!” He whispered, desperate to hear her reply. “Let her go!” John heard Pocahontas yell. He quickly looked over and saw the pirates with Pocahontas and Rebecca. “She has nothing to do with any of this!” Pocahontas yelled, trying to save her daughter. John had never been so scared in his life but he had to find Matthew and tell him to get help quickly. But Matthew wasn’t there. “Look what I found! They’re all over the place!” A pirate said to the men, he had Matthew at the end of a sword. John couldn’t leave them now, who knew what they might do to them. John looked behind him and saw someone come from back of a tree. “Thank god! We need help, Pocahontas and Rebecca have been captured by pirates!” It was the Native American man but he had no intentions of helping John. He pulled a sword from behind him; John looked at him in bewilderment. “Walk.” He demanded. John turned and walked towards the campsite. “Dad!” Rebecca yelled. “John!” Pocahontas said in concern. “I’m alright.” John told them. Pocahontas stared at the man that had captured him. “What do you want from us? If it’s gold you’re after…” John began. “Oh we want gold alright, but we have other matters to attend to first.” The captain said. “Why, if it isn’t John Smith.” Ratcliffe’s voice was heard. “What!” John said stunned. “This really has been all too effortless!” Ratcliffe showed himself. John couldn’t believe it, how did Ratcliffe get here? But there was an even more confusing question to be asked. “How did you get of jail? You committed treason.” John asked confused. “Well you are, I hate to admit, right. Of course the cursed King of England would never have freed me from that dreadful prison. But it is nice when you have friends to help you.” Ratcliffe replied with arrogance. “Humph, those are many of the things you haven’t got. These men obviously didn’t help you because they’re your friends, they want something.” John stated. “Well, you may be right, they do want something as I do.” Ratcliffe replied. John looked at Ratcliffe, “It’s clear that they want gold. But there’s some bad news… there isn’t any.” The pirates began to talk amongst themselves until Ratcliffe told them to shut up. “You all are actually going to believe this? Smith just wants it for himself.” Ratcliffe lied to them, he knew very well that there wasn’t any gold. “I was in your places once, my crew and I came here to the new world first, looking for gold but we found that there wasn’t any. And Ratcliffe knows it, he’s using you.” John stared at him. The pirates were confused, they all knew that John came to the new world with Ratcliffe, if he knew there was gold why didn’t he want any? Ratcliffe looked at them, he could see they were rethinking. “Enough of this nonsense!” Ratcliffe screamed, quieting everyone down. “After all I’m not the one imprisoned.” He looked at John. “You should be.” John glared at him. Ratcliffe sighed, “Now that you know what these men what, I’m sure you’re curious as to what I want.” He said grabbing Rebecca by the arm. “Rebecca!” Pocahontas shouted. “Get your filthy hands off her!” John shouted angrily at him. “It’s so sad that such a beautiful child will go to waste!” Ratcliffe said evilly. Pocahontas looked at him in such a fear she had never felt. John struggled to get loose; he, as well as everyone else, knew what Ratcliffe was going to do. Matthew couldn’t believe all this. Oddly the Native American man looked confused as well as horrified. “Now you will feel what I felt John Smith, defeat and loss!” Ratcliffe said taking out a knife. “REBECCA!” Pocahontas screamed. “NO!” John shouted. “LET HER GO!” Matthew yelled. “STOP THIS!” The Native American demanded. “You said nothing about killing the girl, you only wanted revenge.” He said to Ratcliffe. “Exactly, and what better way to get it by taking what they value most!” Ratcliffe replied. “NO!!!!” Pocahontas pleaded. “AHHH!!!!!!!” Ratcliffe screamed. An arrow had penetrated his arm. Everyone looked into the forest and sure enough there were the warriors. “INDJUNS!” Screamed the pirates. The warriors came rushing in to fight off the pirates. “You morons! Get your guns!” The captain shouted at them. As the men ran for their guns they didn’t realize that they were in for a big surprise. Meeko, Flit and Percy had gathered all the guns in a net and were getting ready to throw them into the ocean! “No… don’t do that!” The pirates pleaded. “Oops!” Meeko squeaked as he let the guns fall from the ship. “NOOOO!” The pirates moaned jumping into the ocean after them. “Rebecca!” John shouted desperately searching for her, but a pirate leapt right in front of him and started swinging his sword. John darted out of the way and knocked the sword out of his hand. Trying to scare John the pirate did, what he thought, some good looking moves but John ended up knocking him out! Meanwhile, Matthew punched out the guy in back of him. “Rebecca!” He shouted trying to look for her but she was nowhere to be found. “End o’ the line for you savage!” A pirate said to Pocahontas, he raised his sword but John tapped him on his shoulder. “Huh?” The pirate asked puzzled. “Her name is Pocahontas!” John said punching him out.  He helped her up. “Where’s Rebecca?” Pocahontas asked frightened. “JOHN!” Pocahontas shouted as a pirate came from behind him. John spun around only to see the pirate lying, unconscious, on the ground. Pocahontas and John looked to see the Native American man standing there. “You must hurry, he took your daughter up to the cliff. The young boy ran up there after them.” The man said showing them the way. Without questions or hesitations John and Pocahontas ran to save Rebecca and Matthew.

“You won’t die yet, not until your father arrives anyway!” Ratcliffe said cruelly to Rebecca as he dragged her to the top of the cliff. “You won’t get away with this! You can’t win, you never will!” Rebecca shouted at him, struggling to get free. “Oh, I don’t intend to get away with anything, the joy of seeing your father suffer is all I need!” Rebecca stared at Ratcliffe, he truly was insane. He could care less what happened to him afterwards, he just wanted John to pay for ruining him. “Rebecca!” Matthew yelled for her. As he reached the top he saw Rebecca struggling to get away from Ratcliffe. “Let her go!” Matthew demanded. Ratcliffe turned around, bewildered that Matthew was actually demanding him of something. “I suggest you leave now boy! Unless you want to die.” Matthew stood there as a memory flashed in his head. He started to remember his father’s death. He could remember hearing the cruel word, “die.” Matthew could see a long purple cape fly away as he reached his father. He looked up and saw the same red cape and he could hear the same wicked voice. “YOU!!!!!” Matthew shouted. He leapt on Ratcliffe and Rebecca fell back. “YOU KILLED MY FATHER!” Matthew shouted as he continued to fight Ratcliffe. Rebecca looked on in terror; Ratcliffe killed John Rolfe? “Matthew!” Rebecca shouted as Ratcliffe forcefully threw him to the ground, knocking him out. Rebecca rushed to his side. “I didn’t know John Rolfe had a son.” Ratcliffe said coldly, confirming that he did kill John Rolfe. “Rebecca!” John called for her. Ratcliffe drew his sword ready to strike Rebecca. But John was too quick; he jumped and shoved Ratcliffe out of the way, saving her. John got up as quickly as possible and he had nothing to defend himself with besides his bare hands. “You won’t win this time!” Ratcliffe yelled at him angrily. Ratcliffe, furiously, swung his sword back and forth trying his best to hit John. But everytime John ducked out of the way making Ratcliffe miss. Pocahontas and Rebecca looked on in fear, what could they do?  “JOHN SMITH!” Yelled someone. It was the Native American man and he threw a sword to John. John caught it and just in time because Ratcliffe was about to hit him. The man rushed over to Pocahontas and Rebecca. “He’ll be alright.” He said looking at Matthew. “I’m so sorry for what I have done, I had no idea he had intentions of killing the girl.” He apologized to Pocahontas. “We have to do something!” Rebecca said as she watched her father fight Ratcliffe.  “John!” Pocahontas yelled as Ratcliffe pushed John to the ground. John was in a very grave situation, for there was no way for him to escape and he had lost his sword. “We can’t just sit here.” Rebecca told them and started off. “No! Rebecca!” Pocahontas tried to stop her. “Know you will feel a pain in which you have never felt before!” Ratcliffe told John Smith. John thought for sure he was going to kill him. Unexpectedly Ratcliffe, still holding the sword, pulled a handgun from his shirt. But he turned because he knew Rebecca was right behind them. It was her he wanted dead. He fired at her but she jumped out of the way. “Rebecca!” Pocahontas yelled. There was no place for Rebecca to hide and so she kept dodging the bullets. “NO!” John shouted. John got up and ran to stop Ratcliffe but he took the sword and slashed John’s leg. John was in such pain he fell to the ground, no longer able to get to his feet. “DAD!” Rebecca yelled, she didn’t know what she was going to do but she had to save her father. Ratcliffe continued to fire the gun as Rebecca raced around him trying to get to her father. Sooner or later Ratcliffe would run out of bullets and that’s exactly what happened. Ratcliffe groaned with anger and frustration as he stomped over to Rebecca who was next to John. Pocahontas was so full of fear and anger she ran to stop Ratcliffe but she was of no concern to him and he shoved her back almost causing her to fall from the cliff. “Go! Run!” John demanded Rebecca, who wouldn’t leave him. He shoved her out of the way just before Ratcliffe could hit her with the sword. Ratcliffe was persistent and continued to try and hit Rebecca. Rebecca kept avoiding his blows until there was no where to go. “This ends now!” Ratcliffe screamed. He stood at the edge of the cliff ready to strike. Pocahontas got up again to try and save her daughter. But Rebecca felt the ground begin to move. She looked under Ratcliffe’s feet and the edge of the cliff was starting to give. It all happened so quickly that there was no time for Rebecca to move. The cliff fell apart and Ratcliffe screamed as he fell to his death but Rebecca went with him. “REBECCA!” Pocahontas screamed in anguish. “NOOOOO!” John cried. “Rebecca!” Matthew yelled for her, after he awoke, he had seen all that had happened. Pocahontas rushed to the edge and John got there as quickly as he could. They desperately looked for Rebecca but there was so much dust they couldn’t see anything. Matthew raced over while the man stayed back, overcome with guilt.  “NO!” Pocahontas sobbed as she fell into John’s arms; he began to cry too. Matthew looked away and as a tear rolled down his face. Silence fell, all that could be heard was Pocahontas’ sobs. Until John said, “Wait… listen!” as he lifted up his head. Pocahontas looked up and everyone was still. “It’s Rebecca!” Matthew yelled as he rushed over to the edge. Everyone looked over and sure enough there was Rebecca. She had caught hold of a branch that was sticking out of the cliff. “Mom! Dad! I’m ok!” “Rebecca!” Pocahontas cried in relief. John grabbed hold of her hand and pulled her up onto the ledge. “Thank god!” John whispered as he hugged her tightly. Pocahontas, John and Rebecca sat there holding each other, thankful that Rebecca had survived. “Thank goodness.” The man said softly with a sigh. “We thought we’d lost you!” John said weakly. “I wasn’t about to let him win.” Rebecca replied. John hugged her tightly and she looked over at Matthew who stood there smiling. Rebecca stood and walked over to him and they embraced each other strongly. “I was so afraid I would never see you again, I could never stand losing you.” Matthew told her. “I could never stand losing you either.” Rebecca replied with a smile. And for the first time they kissed. John started to get up but Pocahontas held him back and kissed him.
