"Well Mrs. Doppler, congratulations! Your test is positive!"

"Dr. Tumele, I may be married, but kindly refrain from addressing me as 'Mrs. Doppler,'" Amelia sneered.

"Fine then, Captain," said Dr. Tumele, who was of the frogpeople species. "As I was saying, Captain, you've tested positive."

"I heard you perfectly well the first time," said Amelia. Too well. It seemed as though the stability in her life had suddenly vanished. She, Captain Amelia, the greatest spacer in all the seven skies, was pregnant.

She half-listened to what else the doctor had to say. Something about "weekly checkups" and "avoid alcohol and drug use during pregnancy" and "be sure to inform me if anything unusual occurs."

"Oh, and Captain," Dr. Tumele continued, "this might not be easy for you, but I would strongly advise that you don't go on any voyages during pregnancy."

Amelia gritted her teeth. "With all due respect, Dr. Tumele, what drives you to believe that you can lure a spacer away from her duties?"

"Captain, your 'duties' should first and foremost be devoted to taking care of the little ones," Dr. Tumele said firmly. "It's not just your body anymore."

"Little ones?" Amelia exclaimed. "Doctor, did you never learn the proper use of plurals?"

"Yes, in fact, I did," Dr. Tumele said with a hint of annoyance. "And for your information, you won't be having only one. There are at least three little hearts beating away inside your womb."

Amelia felt she was going to die.

Jim was sitting in the library of Doppler's observatory, paging through a book on asteroids while Doppler paced nervously around the room.

"Jim, do you think she actually did it?" Doppler said.

Jim looked up from the book. "Knowing her, who's to tell?"

"Perhaps I should have gone with her," Doppler thought out loud. "I mean...she might have needed support...but then again, she'd probably never admit that and just consider me a nusance." His pacing speed quickened. "Or maybe she'll come home telling me she tested negative, but in truth she never actually got tested because she thought it was a foolish idea, or maybe..."

"Doc," Jim said, "No offense, but I can't really study with you rambling on."

"Rambling on, rambling on," Morph repeated as he changed into Doppler.

"Oh...so sorry, Jim," said Doppler. "I know you'll be starting the Acadamy soon, and you want to be well read. I mean, what would they say if you knew nothing about asteriods? I'm sorry; it's just so nerve-wrecking when you're waiting for your wife to come home with the news and..."

"Delbert, I'm home!"

"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!" Doppler screamed. "Oh no. Jim, she's back!!!! What if she's negative??? Then she'll have gone through that for nothing and I'll feel like a jerk. But then again, if she's positive, then we'll be in for a lot of stress for the next eighteen years and beyond!!!!" He began nervously chewing on his fingernails.

"Calm down, Doc," said Jim.

"Calm down???" Doppler said hystericly. "This moment could change my life forever and you want me to calm down???"

Sarah entered the room. "Delbert, what's all this commotion?"

"Haven't you heard?" said Jim, rolling his eyes slightly. "The possible mother-to-be has returned."

"Oh dear," sighed Sarah.

"'Oh dear'???" shouted Doppler. "That's all you can say??? Do you realize the possible outcomes from this????"

"Tish-tosh, Delbert, there is no call to stir up a kerfuffle about this," said a familiar voice. All eyes turned toward the doorway to find Amelia standing there, looking slightly flustered. After a second or two, there was practically a stampede up to the captain with eagerness to discover her status.

"So, did you do it???" Doppler asked franticly. "What did he say??? Are you in any danger??? Will we need a bigger house??? Are there going to be high doctor bills???" He said all this without taking a breath, and while grabbing Amelia's collar in a rather frenzied manner.

"First and foremost Delbert, I ask that you respect personal bounderies," said Amelia.

"Aye-aye, Captain!" Doppler saluted as he quickly stepped back.

"There, that's better," said Amelia.

"So, what did the doctor say?" Doppler, Jim, and Sarah said in unison.

"None of you are able to control yourselves under tension, I see," said Amelia. "Well, no sense in beating around the bush, is there?"

"Well???" Doppler gasped.

"Do you want a straight answer, or shall I give a more dramatic presentation?"

Doppler, Jim, and Sarah glanced at each other.

"I'd pay to see you give a dramatic presentation. Lay it on us!" said Jim.

"Never mind the drama; just tell us the news," said Sarah.

Amelia glanced over at her husband. "Well Delbert, it would appear that you have the deciding vote."

"Deciding vote, deciding vote," echoed Morph, changing into Amelia.

Doppler breathed loudly. "I...hon...I don't know....er....just tell us!!!!"

"Fine then," said Amelia. "You have no taste for drama." She took an extravagantly deep breath and shifted her eyes from Doppler to Jim to Sarah.

"I'm pregnant."
