The Best I've Seen This Year

Movies

The artwork and special effects of "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"

When I saw the spectacular opening sequence, my jaw literally dropped. Ditto when I got my first glimpse of the underwater city of Atlantis, and at the final rescue of the city. I believe I'm in a minority here, but I thought the art and special effects of Atlantis were well worth the price of admission. There were many things wrong (and many things right - can you say Helga?) about the rest of the film. However, it had a beauty, grandeur, and eye-popping wonder to the large scale scenes that will make me watch it again and again for sheer pleasure.

Characters

The characters of "The Emperor's New Groove"

I tried and tried to pick one character to feature here, but I couldn't. I have never seen such a collection of thoroughly enjoyable characters in any one movie. There's Kuzco, done to perfection by David Spade ~ petulant, spoiled, arrogant, groovy, and ultimately turning into a nice guy. Then there's Pacha, solid, dependable, and much more shrewd and proud than he looks. There's Kronk ~ every time the guy comes into a frame, I start to laugh helplessly! There's Yzma, as over the top as any villainess ever got, and priceless as a kitten. And there's Chicha, with her dry sharp wit and loving nature. The story is silly, but who cares when you have a cast as delightful as this one to take you on the journey?
