Tomoko Arikura

In Brother Dear Brother, Tomoko is a bright and friendly individual
with a good sense of humor and a positive outlook on life. However, her first
year at Seiran Academy gets off to a bad start when she and her friend Nanako
end up in separate divisions. A further wedge is driven between her and Nanako
by the machinations of Mariko, another girl at the school who wants to keep
Nanako entirely to herself, and by Nanako’s induction into Seiran’s elite
sorority. Tomoko finds herself being increasingly edged out of Nanako’s life,
and she is quite vocal about her displeasure at the situation. Nonetheless
she remains a true friend, loyal and stalwart, quick to defend Nanako from
the attacks of others and providing her with an example of healthy normalcy
to counteract Seiran’s climate of Gothic intrigue and angst. In this fashion
Tomoko may be compared to her popular older classmate, Kaoru no Kimi, sharing
her qualities of good humor and common sense. However, in her more wistful
moments Tomoko can’t help wishing that she too could be like Nanako and Mariko,
and do the “fashionable thing”….

Comments:
I love Tomoko! Like Kaoru, she gives viewers a refreshing break from the melodrama
and angst that dominates Nanako’s life and the lives of the other characters
in Brother Dear Brother. At the same time, I can’t help but sympathize
with Tomoko, the self-sacrificing good sport who plays an extra in her best
friend’s story and never gets to be a protagonist in her own right. She
has a great personality and is someone I would totally hang out with.
