DIANA: Hey, maybe you could lift the spell, Presto.
PRESTO: Yeah, and maybe YOU could lift a dump truck!

PRESTO: Maybe I can pull somethin' out of the ol' sombrero here...
ERIC: Don't bother...remember what happened last time?
PRESTO: I got water, didn't I?
ERIC: Yeah, in a bowl full of goldfish!

ERIC: Make friends with Venger?! How are we supposed to do THAT?
PRESTO: Buy him another horn for his helmet?

PRESTO: (to an undead Knight) I cast you away by teleportation! (pulls out a telephone). Uh....it's for you! It's your mom!
ERIC: I don't think he has a mom!

ERIC: I can't believe you tried to distract those guards by pulling a rabbit out of your hat.
PRESTO: Hey, don't knock it. How many six-foot-tall rabbits have you seen before?

Comments:

As with all the main characters on this show, Presto seems like a cliche on the surface but actually has far more depth and layers to him, if you bother to look. When I first watched the cartoon, Sheila was my favourite, as she is the one whose shoes I could most easily imagine myself in. These days, my favourite is Presto. I'm a nerd just like him, and I'm proud of it. He seems your typical nerd on the surface--shy, quiet, and socially inept--but (as you can see from the quotes above) he's definitely got an extroverted, goofy, and just plain smart-arse side!

But the most interesting thing about Presto is that, while his hat is unpredictable and he can't control it very well, it's certainly the most versatile of the magic "weapons" and, if he ever got his magic under control, Presto could EASILY become the most powerful--and the most dangerous--of the entire group. (It's the most entertaining magic item as well; the one that provides the most humour.) And you see him do some SERIOUSLY powerful stuff as the show goes along, such as summon stuff from our world, weather/elemental spells, transfiguration, major blasts of energy, protective magic...and hey! Sometimes he actually gets what he asked for! :P

Moral of this story? Don't underestimate the geek.

I also get the feeling that the other kids are just ordinary people using magical items...but Presto is...DIFFERENT. That...part of the magic is inside him, not just his hat. Heck, the show itself bears this out in a way. (The episodes "The Last Illusion" and "The Night of No Tomorrow" give some pretty strong evidence for example, but in the interest of keeping this page spoiler-free I won't say what.) This makes him rather...intriguing.

He's also actually one of the bravest and most heroic characters on the show, in his way. He tries to do the same acts of physical bravery that the stronger warrior characters do, and it's usually only after he's dangling off the cliff that he remembers he's a 98-pound weakling who "goofed off in gym class" (his own words). He may not ACT all that brave while doing it, but the point is, he DOES it, and the actual definition of real courage is to be scared but go ahead and do it ANYWAY, yes? And he has this tendency, every now and then, to FLING himself straight into the worst area of the current danger without the slightest bit of backup, equipment, planning or even--so it would seem--SANITY! :P

Of course, being a nerd, he's kind of an outcast, and doesn't really...fit anywhere. Which makes me feel sorry for him...he just kind of strikes me as rather lonely. Another very good reason to fell sorry for him is the fact that he never got a real NAME! The other kids didn't get a last name, but poor "Presto" never gets a FIRST...

He's also very resourceful: he rarely gets what he WANTED out of his hat, but he usually finds some other, rather creative, way to make it work anyway.

All of this makes him far more than just the cliche he appears on the surface.

His...best? relationship by far is with Eric, which is why so many of the quotes above feature the Cavalier. They snipe back and forth and often laugh at each other, but at the same time they'll always back each other up in a fight. And I've noticed that almost EVERY time Eric is in trouble, it's Presto he calls for help from, not any of the others. Their bond is hard to describe, but definitely strong.
