Nanako is the protagonist of Brother Dear Brother (Oniisama E) and it is through her eyes, for the most part, that we see events unfold. Unassuming and naïve, at the beginning of the series her most pressing concern is picking out her weekly clothing regimen, which she writes to her “dear brother” about at length. However, Nanako quickly becomes an unhappy magnet for controversy—and when she isn’t the object of scandal, she continually finds herself bearing puzzled witness to someone else’s scandal, tragedy or inner mystery. As the series unfolds, Nanako changes and matures. Initially an appropriately submissive and demure young girl who often finds herself the victim of intrigues and resentments she can barely understand, she grows to leave her old passivity behind, and from a confused and uncertain onlooker she develops into an active participant who speaks out increasingly against injustice.

More about Nanako:
Nanako is the daughter of two loving lower middle-class parents. She is clearly very bright, maintaining the high grades necessary both to test into Seiran and to meet the standards set by Seiran’s elite Sorority. She is also trusting and sweet, with a capacity for friendship with people as different as the good-humored Tomoko, the intemperate and impulsive Mariko and the self-destructive Saint Juste.
