Marlene's hometown of Corel was destroyed when she was just a baby in Final Fantasy VII, and she was adopted by Barrett, her biological father Dyne's best friend. In Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Barrett leaves Marlene in the care of Cloud and Tifa, while he searches for a new energy source since the world has seemingly abandoned using mako. When Cloud leaves without explanation, Marlene has to step up to care for the ailing Denzil.
