Mariko Shinobu
Mariko from Brother Dear Brother (Oniisama E) has two very deep
desires: to be a member of Seiran Academy’s illustrious academy, and to have
Nanako all to herself. She is a paradoxical individual prone to emotional
extremes: equally fierce in her loves and in her hatreds, she has a capacity
for ruthless manipulation and for deep loyalty. Beautiful, feminine, and of
ambiguous sexual orientation, she is an attention-starved, lonely girl looking
for affection…and willing to obtain it by any means necessary. Mariko harbors
a deep prejudice towards men, probably because of the stigma she has lived
under due to her father’s profession as a pornographer—however, Takashi Ichinomiya,
a friendly male college student who has shown her kindness, may be prove an
exception. Intemperate, impulsive Mariko is admirable for her brash honesty,
which is also a flaw. She is characterized by her remarkable crimson lips
and by her love of purple, which dominates her wardrobe.

When I first began watching the show I thought I was going to dislike Mariko.
Her obsession with her personal appearance, seeming superficiality and school
girlish scheming are not traits that I admire at all. However, I soon found
myself understanding her behavior, and gradually grew to become quite fond of
her. She is a fierce individual, a strange combination of fragility and toughness,
with a courage and brevity that is refreshing in a culture where females are
generally not encouraged to be so forthright.
