Light Yagami is the son of the chief of police and a straight A student, leading a seemingly perfect, ordinary life. Hardly anyone would suspect him of becoming a mass murderer after he picks up the Death Note that fell from the world of the death gods into the human world. Any person whose name is written in the notebook will die. Light begins leading a double life as Kira ("Killer"), passing his righteous judgment on the criminals of the world, sparing only those he deems deserving of life. His ultimate goal is to reign over the bright new world as a god.

It's rather interesting to have a protagonist who is actually the villain. Light's intentions are good, only his mind - if brilliant - is warped. He wants to purge the world of evil and thinks he's the only one who can do that. His ultimate goal is to become the god of the new world he has created.
What's twisted is that on the one hand, you know what Light is doing is wrong. You end up rooting for him anyway because he displays such genius in carrying out his plans. He simultaneously has to keep up the facade of being an ordinary student (and keep up his good grades to ward off suspicion), keep slaying people as Kira in his free time and think of ways to outsmart those who are trying to hunt him down, sometimes even working against himself. He goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure nobody will ever find out he's really Kira, displaying a brilliance of mind rarely witnessed in anyone. You almost want his dream to come true, as crazy as it sounds, just to reward such persistence and determination.
