In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Katara, a waterbender from the South Pole, along with her brother, Sokka, discovers the missing Avatar: a 112-year-old kid named Aang. They decide to help him on his quest to learn all four bending arts and defeat the Fire Nation. It is through her eyes that we experience most of the story; she is even the one who introduces each episode, where she gives the history of the Avatar. Katara is the only waterbender left from her village, and is determined to become a master at her art. She is very compassionate, as well as determined, and a great help to anyone who befriends her.

Katara starts the story with very few waterbending abilities, having had no one to teach her. But, as the show progresses, she learns from adversity, as well as from other waterbenders they meet on their travels, and becomes a force to be reckoned with, even for the great Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. Katara's mother died some time ago, and her father is believed dead after going to fight the Fire Nation. The necklace her mother gave her is Katara's most prized possession, and it gives her courage to fight on and faith in herself. Katara hates the sexist attitude that is a tradition in her tribe, and Sokka often frustrates her when he treats her that way. But, despite all of their arguments, Katara admires Sokka, and looks to him when things get tough. But even though she values what he says they should do, if he is in trouble, she will be the first to jump into the fray to help him or take the lead in their mission. At first, Katara only saw Aang as a kid, a little crazy, and really naive, but now, she's come to know him a lot better. Now, how she feels about Aang is anyone's guess... and trust me, EVERYONE is guessing. She has great faith in Aang, and, as she says: "I believe... Aang can save the world."
