The corrosive, pollution-feasting, amorphous, bubbly, nasty Hexxus is the villain of Ferngully, and he's an environmentalist's nightmare come true. Released by humans from a long captivity, he's out to take over the forest and poison it out of existence.

I think that Hexxus is one of the most brilliantly conceived villains in animation. The animators take full advantage of his flowing, amorphous shape to add both whimsy and menace to the character. I admit I like the whimsy better - I mean, this villain is cute at first! He sucks down poisons with greedy glee, and he's comically dismayed when the source "dries up". Having the great Tim Curry as his voice actor guarantees that he will be a fun character. Yet he is also creepy, menacing, vicious, and dangerous, and determined to destroy everything good. He needs no minions to be powerful and funny. But most of all, I think his various shapes, from cheerful blob to stormcloud menace, make him more entertaining and original than the average animated villain.
