Cid was always a daredevil, and dreamed of the sky in his youth. His dream to see space came into reality in Final Fantasy VII, when the Shin-Ra built him a rocket and planned to send him into space. However, things altered when Sierra (originally known as Shera in North America), a fellow employee, was not able to make it to safety in time. Cid aborted the mission, and his dreams to see space were diminished. Though he joined Cloud and was able to see space, he realized that there was more to life than the skies. In Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, he returns with the others above the Sierra, his new and improved airship.
