Comments:
Barbara is a very bright girl and has developed an interest in computers and martial arts, especially judo. She is very skilled in both of her interests. Barbara studies to be a librarian. Originally she only wore the Batfgirl suit to go to a costume party but was mistaken for a vigilante and attacked by criminals. She managed to defeat them using her knowledge of martial arts and some strategy. This proved to her that she did have the skills to be a vigilante and the thrill of the fight was much to her liking. Since then she has been very active. She has formed a close connection to Batman/Bruce Wayne, who sees himself as the main protector of Gotham, and some rivalry with Batman's main enemies. Batgirl is an excellent fighter but her main weapon is her mind. She is always studying her strategy before attacking any criminal and she is herself a skilled detective, due to her deducing abilities. She is very well-educated and a fast learner. Though she is quite devoted to her role she is not obsessed with crime-fighting like Batman and besides her strong sense of justice and duty she also seems to be motivated by the thrill she gets from crime-fighting. Though young she shouldn't be underestimated. Besides Batman himself there isn't a more dangerous vigilante in town.

The Origin of Batgirl
Dimadick’s description of Batgirl’s origin is correct, coming from the DC comic books. But the animated series, The Adventures of Batman and Robin, tells a different tale. The story occurs in a two-part Two-Face story entitled “Shadow of the Bat”, written by Brynne Stephens.
Barbara’s interest in library science is not mentioned, but she is shown to be a superb gymnast and acrobat. Her Dad, Commissioner Gordon, is framed and arrested for accepting bribes, and the police force and other city officials hold a rally for him to show their support. Barbara tries to enlist Batman’s appearance at the rally, but he refuses, believing his investigation is more important. So Barbara decides “Batman” will appear “one way or another!”.
She dresses in a bat-suit and appears as “Batman” at the rally, but the bad guys attack and she’s forced into a fight. Robin accidentally discovers that she is a girl, and “Batgirl” makes the news. Barbara decides to continue the masquerade, and when she helps save the lives of Robin and Gordon, even Batman admits, “… there’s always room for one more.”
