Balto is one of the most inspirational critter characters I've seen. Half dog, half wolf, he had known persecution all of his life simply because of who he is. Tragically, he learns to hate that part of himself as well. But it is that very part of himself that gives him the strength to endure in order to save the life of his friend, an extremely ill child who needs the medicine that only he can deliver. My favorite scene with Balto is that moment when it appears he is going to give in to despair, but then he looks up and sees a beautiful white wolf in front of him. Remembering what he had been told, that a dog may not survive the journey but a wolf can, he is able to stand up and finally be strong and proud of who he is. (sniff, where's my kleenex?)

Ask any Balto fan this question, and they'll tell you that the best part of the movie is the encounter with the mystical, almost ghostly white wolf: Balto discovers his strength as being part wolf and learns to be proud of it. There are no words during this time, so all the emotion is in the graceful animation and powerful music. It sends chills down a person's spine every time. :-) (Pictures of the encounter below)

Tidbit: Balto is a great character to watch onscreen, but also cool to research more about once you've seen the movie. Most people know that Balto was a husky, not a wolfdog, who did pull antitoxin to Nome in 1925 (Yes, the statue in New York is official!). He didn't, however, run the whole trip. Look up the real story!

For some reason, even though I am a total Balto fan, and I somewhat enjoyed the white wolf scene, I was never exactly... taken aback by it. *shrugs* Personally, my favorite scene was at the end, when Jenna and Balto reunite after he returns from the trip. Although at first they're happy to see each other, which is to be expected, when they touch noses, Balto stops and seems to think back to when no one liked him (or so he thought). When Jenna reassured him (along with the cool music in the background), I thought that was the perfect ending for the movie... hero who thinks everyone hates him finds out the town's most beutiful girl likes him. Lovely!
