I love this little scene, and especially Al's speech, because to me it illustrates much of what I love best about Fullmetal Alchemist. It takes place after they've fought Scar, and both are pretty banged up. Ed's lost his metal arm and Al has a huge hole in one side of him. During the fight, Ed tried to sacrifice his own life to save Al's. This is what resulted:
Ed: *crawling to Al* Say something, Al. Are you still with me?
Al: *punches him* You IDIOT!
Ed: What's that for?
Al: Why didn't you run away when I told you to?
Ed: Because, Steel-for-Brains, then he would have killed you!
Al: So, you decided to die instead? *sarcasm* That's really smart.
Ed: Don't call your older brother an idiot, idiot!
Al: *grabs his shirt and hauls him up* That's not how we do things. Live,
and be content while we can. Live to research more alchemy so one day we
can get our bodies back. That is how we do things, brother. Dying,
and dying by yourself, and leaving me on my own? That's something I won't
let you do. *his arm clanks to the ground* Oh, this is perfect! Now my
arm's fallen off, too! Today is a terrible day!
