The sequel may be flashier and more fun, but it's the original that hands down wins in the story department. As the 70s drew to a close, Disney's track record had slowly been weakening. The last two movies, The Aristocats and Robin Hood, were fine as Disney cartoons go, but they lacked the oomph that Disney provided when they made The Jungle Book. The Rescuers provided that necessary boost that Disney needed. As such, it is the strongest movie from the 70s, often called the fluff decade.
The Rescuers offers quality Disney entertainment without going overboard in any direction. Bernard and Biance have wonderful personalities and are perfectly voice acted. Their chemistry is interesting, and I find the concept of Bernard being slightly superstitious a wonderful quirk. The story moves along briskly and beautifully, providing a wonderful blend of humor, much of which is provided by Orville, and drama. There are many wonderful scenes, such as the Rescue Aid Society song and Orville's dive off the building. Penny's plight and her song "Someone's Waiting For You" provide ample heart. All in all, a wonderful Disney film.
