WOAH!!!! This one is SUCH a big improvment from the first one! First of all,
in this one there's a lot more mystery sewn into the plot. There's even a part
of it your not sure about until they tell you. And though you can tell it's
still directed mostly to kids, they did a great job of making the script seem
more realistic. There is computer animation, and it's really cool to see 3D
animation in an anime movie, however obvious it is. Most of the humor comes
from Team Rocket, and it really is very funny in some parts. Highly recommended!
Before you say anything about the grade I gave Pokemon 2000, know that I really do like the TV show. It's funny, offbeat, and has very unique and well developed characters. And I really wanted to like the movies that have come out here, but they just drive me nuts. The first movie was a big boring moral lesson and while the second one is slightly better it's still not very good.
The biggest culprit is the virtual lack of character development. The villain, who is never named, is just there and I couldn't even tell you the other two kids who hang around with Misty and Ash are called. Another thing that bothered me was I couldn't follow the story at all. The villain guy captures these flying creatures of ice, lightning and fire to let loose another flying creature but then the creatures start attacking each other and my head was spinning. Oh and Ash is supposedly the chosen one to help save the world by placing three different stones at this altar thing. If this doesn't make any sense, I'm sorry, it didn't to me.
They really needed to spruce up the animation too, even if it's just a little bit, I'd be happy. The computer animation they added was fine, but pretty unnecessary.
The one thing I did like was it was more action-packed than the first movie. I liked the scene where Team Rocket and Ash are speeding across the ice on a raft. There were also a few characters here I liked, but again just underdeveloped and underused. Melody had real potential to be a cool heroine, but they just toss her aside as just another girl.
All I'll say about the short before the movie is that it's surreal, oh and Squirtle does a funny dance too.
Ah well, I guess I'll just stick to watching the TV show. Maybe third time's
a charm.
