Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade is a dark and disturbing anime that
tells the story of The Special Unit, a counter-terrorist force, and The
Red Riding Hoods, innocent-looking young girls who carry around bombs
in their bookbags. More specifically, it tells the story of Kazuki Fuse,
a Special Unit soldier whose life changes when he grows reluctant to
shoot a young school girl, giving her time to detonate her bomb, and
later on meets up with the dead girl's sister.
The story surrounding this anime isn't horrible. In fact it's pretty
reasonable. However, the movie is utterly violent. I almost got sick to
my stomach watching it. I would recommend this movie to those who enjoy
the more violent anime entries like Akira, but the sense of
otherworldliness and of being larger than life that attracts most fans of anime is
curiously missing from this rather mundane movie. The animation is
stiffer than cardboard, and the characters' expressions and dialogue are
rather hollow, even more so than most anime entries.
Overall, not a terrible anime, but I didn't enjoy watching it too much.
For die-hard anime fans, I would recommend a look, but if you want to
watch better, stick with more stylish and better animated movies like
Princess Mononoke and Blood: The Last Vampire.
