Reviews for The Iron Giant

By Squirrelperson Spoilers

It's always cool to see movies you're dying to see and not be disappointed. Although when you see a movie you're not expecting much out of and it turns out to be one of your favorites, you can appreciate it that much more.

The Iron Giant is mainly about a kid named Hogarth who discovers a giant robot who falls out of the sky. A government agency is tracking it down, mainly by Kent Mansley, who sees it as a threat to humanity. Hogarth enlists the help of Dean McCoppin, a scrapyard owner, to hide the giant.

The one thing I immediately noticed about this movie is that it very much doesn't have what society expects in animated features. There's no convoluted love story. There's no out-of-place singing and dancing. There's no plucky animal comic relief. All this is pushed aside to concentrate on an excellent story that never feels sappy or cliche. Of course it stills has some great comedy bits and lines. I couldn't help but laugh out loud at anything that was played on the television and Dean's little squirrel mishap.

As for the animation, it's excellent as well. The Iron Giant character may be computer generated but he's digitally colored to fit in with his surroundings and it completely works. One scene where the giant is shot out of the sky and crashes into the ground is extremely well done. The characters are very likable and Kent Mansley is one of the best "villains" in any animated movie.

Is there anything I didn't like? Well...not really. It's got everything I could ask for in a movie even if it doesn't follow some formula. In fact, it's probably the best American animation feature out there. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie!!!

The Iron Giant is one of the best animated movies I have ever seen. It has something for all ages. Adventure, drama, lots of humor and something magical that makes it so appealing. There are no songs, which is a nice change, especially when the story is carried on well enough without them, the characters are all unique and loveable, the animation is top notch and the story is heartwarming. What more can you ask for? If you still haven't seen this wonderful film, go buy it (yes, BUY) now!

WOW. I was extremely impressed with this movie - especially considering that when it first came out, I was sceptical of it. Thanks to some fans here at AL, I bought it to see what all the hype was about. And there is plenty to love, as I soon discovered.

First, I loved the time frame this movie was set in. Even the little details of the movie reflect "1957" - from Hogarth's bicycle to the cars in Dean's junk yard, from the "Nuclear Fall-Out" film clip to the classic Maypo commercial.

The characters are all well done. Hogarth is a great character struggling with school and a single mom. Dean is a favorite, possibly portraying the "soon to come" 1960's with his beatnik attitude. Annie is another favorite for me, being the single mom who cares about her son, but has to work all the time. Kent is a good villian - right down to the point that I hated him by the end for everything he did. And the Iron Giant is memorable, his CGI blending perfectly with the cell animation.

Nice background music. No songs and dancing, no characters singing in the middle of important scenes. It helped you concentrate on the storyline.

I loved the moral of this story. I loved the feelings it gave me as the Giant decided to be "Superman". I loved the slight romance inudendo at the very end of the film (just enough to make me smile sappily, but not so much that the film was ruined!)

I definitely recommend this one. I'm sorry I waited so long to see it because of my doubts! ^_^
