I always thought this movie got a bum deal. It's not considered one of their greats just because it's not a high profile, high-budget, high-grossing movie. But you know what? It's one of their best. The characters are fleshed out considerably from when they were on Goof Troop, mainly Goofy and Max, and the story while nothing revolutionary is a lot of fun.
Goofy is afraid of losing touch with his son Max, so he plans a fishing trip across the USA, just the two of them. Unfortunately this is when Max was supposed to go to a party with his dream girl Roxanne and Max with little choice in the matter is forced to come along. Also, Max tells Roxanne that he's going to the big Power Line concert in L.A. in a fit of desperation.
While there's plenty of comedy in this movie, there's a surprising amount of heart. I have never seen a teen react anywhere near as real to life as Max does in all of the situations. The "nothing" attitude, the sudden outburst of rage when they're leaving a rather lame amusement park, his infatuation with Roxanne, and his terror of becoming just like his dad. Try finding a teen actor that can do any of that and pull it off so well.
Where the movie doesn't fare as well, but in my opinion doesn't bring it down, is the animation and songs. Neither are by all means bad, just not up to par with what Disney usually does in their movies.
There are a lot of fun little tidbits scattered about too. The running gag of the nuns, the casual mention of Donald Duck in conversation, Pete's all-puprose RV (with swimming pool, basketball court AND bowling alley), the hilarious Lester's Possum Park show, and even the Power Line concert sung by Tevin Campbell.
The more I watch this movie, the more I love it. In my opinion, it deserves
to stand alongside Disney's best with pride.
This movie was great. I had my doubts about it (especially since I only could see the Finnish and not the English version, which I think would have been more enjoyable to watch, even though the Finish one wasn't bad either), but it turned out to be a really cool movie.
The characters were all realistic and fun, my sympathies went out for both Goofy and Max. I could very well understand Max's embarrassment over his father's goofs and lame holiday plans (such as going to "Lester's Possum Park"), but Goofy was also easy to understand as the father who just wanted to have a good time with his son and "connect". Their emotions were very well portrayed. The animation was top notch. The only thing that partly bothered me was the lack of shadowing, but I guess they didn't want to part too much of the style of the TV show's animation. The concert towards the end literally got me hyped as well, made me want to dance to the music, seeing all the spotlights, dancers and the great feeling of a concert spectacle. The animation in that part was simply amazing. The rest of the movie was fantastically animated, while not exactly in the style of Disney's most thetrical feature films. The music was also great, I especially enjoyed the dance songs by Powerline, performed in the concert and during Max's big entree at his school. They all had the right beat to get your feet tapping and it matched with the animation perfectly. The story was a fairly unique one, for a Disney movie. No fairy tales, no magnificent fantasy world's, instead a painstakingly ordinary and truthful teenager's world. It had a lot of heart and probably would be a great one to watch with your dad on a roadtrip.;) It wasn't a rollercoaster of laughter as I expected, just many jokes enough to make you smile and giggle a few times, but not howl with laughter.
Overall, I thought the film was excellent. The only thing I wished there would
have been was more humor, which is why I'm giving it four stars. But this is
one to watch.
