The Great Mouse Detective is one of Disney's most under appreciated films.
Yet it is also one of Disney's Greatest Animated features with non stoping suspence!
Vincent Price plays a wonderful role as the Neferrious Professor Ratigan as
Barrie Ingham voices one of Disney's most darring Heros. Basil of Baker Street,
The Pint Sized Version of Sherlock Holmes. The Story line is adorable as are
the characters. The CGI is classic and wonderful. Off the edge of your seat
excitement! If there is any movie that I would recomend first from Disney, It
would most wonderfuly Be THE ADVENTURES OF THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE
Disney's 26th Animated Masterpeice!
"The Great Mouse Detective" is a film both children and adults can appreciate.
Kids will enjoy the cute characters, the slapstick, and the suspense, while
adults will appreciate the gorgeous art, the voice work, the intelligent storyline,
and the affectionate, tongue-in-cheek Sherlock Holmes homage. As a fan of Arthur
Conan Doyle's creation, I rank this movie right up there with "The Adventures
Of Sherlock Holmes" as the best Sherlock Holmes movie of all time. (Incidently,
"TAOSH" starred BASIL Rathbone. Get it?) And the trap scene is a classic! Everything
clicks - from Ratigan's Rube Goldberg-like infernal device to Basil's depression
(a trait he shares with the man who lives above him) to the ingenius escape
and what Basil has everyone do the instant they are free. One warning to parents
of very young children: There are some scary parts.
"The Great Mouse Detective" is an excellent movie. It has wonderful characters
and a great storyline. The music, composed by Henry Mancini, is awesome, as
well. "The Great Mouse Detective" is a movie anyone would like.

After the vastly underrated and infinitely superior The Fox and the Hound, the
last of their great "old schoolers", Disney went through an experimental
period when they fiddled around with the way they told their stories and nobody
especially cared for their movies. This period lasted until Disney came back
with The Little Mermaid. However, out of all the movies that came out during
this unfairly trashed decade(it got worse treatment than the 70s), The Great
Mouse Detective dates itself rather well. Seriously, when I was a kid, this
was the coolest Disney movie around. Okay, so The Black Cauldron was cooler(seriously),
but that movie didn't date itself very well since I was a kid.
So if The Great Mouse Detective wasn't classic Disney, why did a kid like me find it so compelling? It's easy. Kids aren't as stupid as adults take them for and occasionally even kids recognize intelligent scripting. The Great Mouse Detective was Disney storytelling at its finest. It featured colorful and wonderfully realized characters, not boring and ordinary ones, and its story was fast and adventurous without seeming formulaic or stupid. Not once did it slow down. When I was a kid, the frantic and wonderfully conceived mousetrap sequence was one of the finest Disney segments ever. Not only was it a cool animation device, it wonderfully strengthened the personalities of all the characters involved. And was there any villain more deliciously realized than Ratigan? Also, while the songs of the movie were snoozes, the animation was top notch. While cartoony and quirky when compared with the dark and detailed animation that typified The Black Cauldron, the animation and scripting in The Great Mouse Detective is far more effective. Examine the Big Ben tower sequence, for example. Not only was it a great turning point in the story, it had the animation to match its dynamic beauty. There are times when I feel that even The Secret of Nimh has got nothing on this movie.
Given all this, is it any wonder
why I rate this forgotten classic so? I think not.
Basil as the Sherlock Holmes of Mousedom is a fantastic idea and it carries out nicely through out the film. And has there ever been a villain more blood thursty than Ratigan? I also like the idea that the hero for once dosen`t have a love intrest.
In general this is a film for both kids and adults to enjoy. But I want to warn parents that there might be some scenes that are a bit scary for young children.
Basil of Baker Street (Barrie Ingham) is an adventurous, and sometimes eccentric, rodent counterpart of Sherlock Holmes. From a witty and compelling storyline to one of the most evil villans of all time, "The Great Mouse Detective" is a sure classic.
When a humble toymaker is kidnapped by the oh-so-sinister Professor Ratigan (Vincent Price) it's up to the famous Basil of Baker Street alongside bumbling Doctor David Q. Dawson (Val Bettin) and Mr Flavasham's daughter, Olivia (Susanne Pollatscheck) to save the day. Concluding with the thrilling climax at the top of Big Ben, this movie is bound to get anyone hooked. (Note: I once watched this movie 4 times in 3 days!)
If you liked such movies as "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (Go Daniel Radcliffe!) or "Osmosis Jones" (without the bathroom humour) and mixed them together, you'd get a thrilling, complex plot and lovable, hilarious new characters!
By the way, probably the best quote is:
RATIGAN: Bright and alert as always? Here's the list. You know what
to do, and no mistakes.
FIDGET: No-no-no mistakes. Let's see... 'Tools', 'Gears', 'Girl',
'Uniforms'...
RATIGAN: NOW, FIDGET!
FIDGET: I'm goin', I'm goin'!
You gotta love that one! A delightful movie! Bravo! Encore! A warning to parents with young kids, some scenes are not for everybody.

I don't see what the big fuss about this movie is. Everything about it is average: Character, plot and animation. And as for Basil being a part of Sherlock Holmes--weak. Very weak. Sherlock always struck me as an intelligent person in the short stories I've read, wheras Basil strikes me as more of a pompus eccentric. Overall, this movie was alright, but not the best.
By Kaxxar After recently buying the DVD and watching The Great Mouse Detective again, I can now safely say that it's one of Disney's best movies.
I never really could go for the older Disney movies; they always felt so stilted to me (except for Robin Hood). The Great Mouse Detective is one of their first movies that really felt fun.
I can also see why it wasn't one of their popular ones. Basil was an unusual hero for a Disney movie, as he seemed to act out of his best interests rather than being a pure hero. Even though the movie was rated G, it had a lot of elements that aren't exactly kid-friendly (smoking, excessive drinking, a bar brawl, a mouse dancer in skimpy clothing, a mouse getting eaten by a cat). I also think that people don't seem to realize that the movie was not based on Sherlock Holmes. While it has Holmes elements, it's actually based off of Basil of Baker Street.
But the reason that it's one of their best was because of all these aspects. It's the first Disney movie (in my opinion) that tried to break away from the Disney formula. Its humor was a little edgier, the characters had depth and we only had one real musical number (The ode to Ratigan). The only thing the movie really suffered from was that the story itself was a bit straight-forward.
I think the best aspect to the movie was the climax. It truly felt thrilling, especially during the scene inside Big Ben with the camera panning wildly through all the clock gears.
The Great Mouse Detective is just a nice breath of fresh air for an animated feature and would definitely rank among my top 5 Disney movies. Those who didn't give it a chance, watch it again. How else to explain its cult following in the animation world?
