Awesome movie by the same movie that did "Lord of the Rings",
"Fritz the Cat", and "Heavy Metal" but superior to all, and much more
appropriate to younger generations.
The plot itself is simple. There are two Kingdoms: One of Fire, ruled
by King Jarol, One of Ice, ruled by Nekron. Alas, Nekron is evil, so
he decides to extend his kingdom by use of giant glacier/army of
subhumans.
The animation is incredible. The backgrounds are great, and although
you can tell when they cheat a bit, its fairly uncommon, and for a film
made the same year I was born (1983) it really impressed me. The
characters don't have much depth to them, but the film doesn't stay
stationary for too long, so you won't find many places where you're reaching
for the remote.
The rating, as with all Bakshi films, parents should watch it first
before allowing their children to see it. The main female character runs
around almost naked throughout the film (if its any consequence, so
does the lead male) and while she's not a completely helpless creature,
falls into the usual female stereotype. The violence is fairly graphic
and realistic, as is the rest of the film.
All in all, if you want some emotional depth, or are expecting a
regular animated film, don't see this one. In fact, step away and leave that
section be. Its hard to find as it is, so you'll probably be
disappointed. But, if you're looking for a great old film that excels in art
and story, this is a must have.
Recommended for anybody who loves fantasy and action.
