Reviews for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

By Red Pickle Duck Spoilers

Trying to find a good review about this movie is near impossible. Despite this movie's incredibly animated sequences, alternative story line and great step forward in the genres of science-fiction and fantasy, it got slammed left right and center, and is even considered one of the biggest flops of all time.

However, in my honest opinion, this is a great movie! It may seem rushed, but you find people complaining that stories that are three hours developing character are three hours we don't need to see. Character, like all aspects of this film, is denounced quickly in this movie; motive is strong and reason is justifiable from all sides concerned.

The Plot: A giant meteor has crash landed on Earth, sending out these ghost like 'invaders' which kill a person upon contact. The source of these creatures is immenant: The meteor. How to get rid of this crator, however, is the problem. I don't like too many spoilers, so I'll leave it at that.

As much as I enjoyed this film, its not for everybody. If you're closed minded and watch movies to point out "That could never happen!" this movie isn't for you. If you like stereotypical endings where everybody lives happily ever after, this movie is not for you. However, if you're a fan of the Final Fantasy Series, enjoy movies with a good twist or even a fan of science fiction/fantasy in general, go see this movie. You'll be glad you did.

This movie was pure goat cheese. The animation was great but the plot made on damn sense at all. I nearly lost 2 or 3 hours of my life cuz' of this movie. This has nothing to do with the game, making it unfair to the fans of Final Fantasy. This is a disgrace to animation. If I could, I would buy the DVD, but I won't watch it, not even for the extra features.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within will probably go down in history as the best example of what you shouldn't do in an animated movie. There's so much that went wrong in this one.

To start with, the name Final Fantasy comes from the popular video game series, but has absolutely nothing to do with any of the ideas, concepts or storytelling that made the games so popular. Here, we get a bad Alien knockoff script, nothing like the medieval settings of the games.

Some people may argue that the graphics and animation were excellent. I do not agree in the least. While some characters (Particularly Dr. Sid) came off well, the characters looked like mannequins and moved as if they were being controlled by puppeteers above. Any emotions the characters tried to convey didn't look realistic. In other words, the characters were lifeless.

All the movie cliches that exist made their way into this one. The characters- The beautiful scientist. The comic relief. The tough female. The handsome love interest. The older scientist. The story itself was an intelligible Alien-like plot and when a character utters "Whoa, this is starting to make some kind of weird sense" it sure didn't to me and the other patrons in the theater. They tried to integrate a little humor too and it's just lame. Dialogue was cliche as well. You could practically predict what was going to happen or be said next.

I can understand that people are trying to move forward with computer animated features being realistic. But when it all boils down, there really wasn't a need to make this one in CGI. It would have been plenty cheaper just to hire some actors to be part of some sci-fi flick and delete Final Fantasy from the title. Because it flopped should be a wake-up call to the makers that CGI won't sell a movie if it doesn't have any heart or soul to it. Final Fanatsy: The Spirits Within is simply a hollow, cliche and lifeless movie. You've been warned.
