If you were to come to my house and hear some of the "arguments" my father and I have (BatB is his fav "Disney," Aladdin is my fave movie, period), you might get the impression that I don't care for this film. On the contrary. BatB is DEFINATLEY number two in by book, Aladdin bing numero uno, of course.
The movie opens with a shot of a beautiful and mystical castle in a glittering forest, and then we are shown several "stained glass windows" showing how the Beast became what he is. The movie is already stunning, and we're not even 3 minutes into the film! The songs are wonderful, with the exception of "Gaston" and the "Mob Song." (Oddly enough, while I don't care for "Gaston," I am very fond of the reprise) The opening song, "Belle," is an enjoyable five-minute look into the village where Belle lives. The villan, Gaston, is handsome, yet slightly predictable. The Beast is a well developed character, but-as I've told my father so many times- as a prince, his lips are amusingly HUGE. Belle is one of the best heroines ever, second only to *me*(look at my name). She's a bookworm who won't let other people control her life, and she's determined to have "adventure in the great, wide somewhere." She's pretty, but not beautiful like *me*, Mulan, and Ariel, although she is certainly prettier than, say, Megera or Esmerelda.
This is a very good movie, but not as lighthearted as some others. If you're
looking for a sweeping, moving, slightly more serious animated movie, BatB is
your best bet. If you're looking for a VERY FUNNY, sweeping, moving film though,
Aladdin would probably be more to your liking.
