The movie I want to review is called balto. it's about this dog part husky/part
wolf. that is an out cast in alaska ,he saved the sled team and the children.
Balto has great animation and a good plot that is based on a true story. Unfortunately the characters are not engaging except for Steele, whom I was rooting for the whole time. Don't get me wrong, yes, he was mean and a bully, but he was well portrayed. He made a great and believable villain. While Balto, the main hero, was just too darn PERFECT. What's with the: "I will not fight even if I get kicked, stoned, bitten, betrayed and almost killed" deal? No dog, half-wolf or not would let themselves be kicked around like that forever! And I dare you to find a dog that can actually slide down a rope using only his teeth. Okay, so a talking animal is not very realistic to begin with, but come on. The sidekicks, Nikki, Star and Kaltag were annoying and Boris was only funny on occasion. The polar bear cubs, however, voiced by Phil Collins were cute and not over the edge. Jenna was the other character I was rooting for the whole time. She was beautiful and kind and had more character than Balto.
Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention to the music, which a lot of people
have praised, so no comment on that. I found this film very disappointing, probably
because of all the hype I had been getting about it from the people who had
seen it and loved it. My expectations were too high, I guess. Though let's not
forget that I had high hopes for Shrek and The Iron Giant too and I wasn't disappointed
by them....
Spoilers Balto is a outcast wolf-dog, who lives in Nome, Alaska, that takes on a dangerous journey with his friends, that is the goose Boris, the two polar bears Muk and Luk, and the beautiful girl dog Jenna, as Nome is fighting Diphteria, and the doctor don't have any medicine left. But, Balto and his friends is having bad company with the mean Steele, and his funny sidekicks Nikki, Kaltag and Star, and the battles between Steele and Balto, and Balto and a bear may upset younger viewers. James Horner's music is atmospheric, and made me long after my skiing vacations in Norway. The visual effects and the animation is great, and there are many touching scenes that always mades me cry, but the movie could have been longer, and the story better.
Some of the many highlights are Balto's meeting with a wolf spirit, the northern light animation, the animated opening shot, and the ending, where Balto and his team returns.
The sequel is naturally not as good as the original, and there haven't been many since the sequel explosion in the early 90's.
